Sydney 38’s set for big year with Pan Pac’s, Nationals and professional Class Management

With 46 Sydney 38's racing in Australia, the Sydney 38 class is leading the way in offshore keel boat racing. Last week the 2003-2004 Sydney 38 Calender was released by the Class Association.

Hogs Breath Race Week in August, has been chosen to host the Sydney 38 One Design Pan Pacific Championship for 2003. This will be followed a week later by the Sydney 38 Nationals at the 20th Hahn Premium Race Week at Hamilton Island.

Commenting on the (Nationals)decision, recently appointed Sydney 38 One Design Association Executive Officer Simon Reffold said, 'We were looking for an on-going concept that would 'internationalise' the class and the annual Pan Pacific Championships will do that for Sydney 38 One Designs.

We have a number of boats in the US and SE Asia and we want to encourage these owners to attend this regatta and mix it up with their Australian counterparts. There are a number of great boats available for charter locally and because they are strictly one design, using a charter boat represents no impediment to performance.

Commenting further on his executive role with the Class Association Simon expanded, ‘Having sailed extensively in the class and having seen the potential the class has not only in Australia, but overseas, I was very excited about becoming involved.

With a background in both sports administration and event management, I am sure we will bring a new level of professionalism to Association management and help the Sydney 38 One design maintain its position as the pre-eminent offshore keel boat class in the country.

Sydney 38 One Design Owners have a very strong sense of what they want to achieve for the class and it is our job to bring their visions to reality.'

Martin Thompson from Sydney Yachts said, ‘The appointment of Simon Reffold further cements the Sydney 38 as the premier racing and social One Design class in Australia and ensures the class has a class structure that delivers to owners for many years.

The appointment is aimed at delivering an even more efficient communication
platform for owners between the association and yacht clubs, event organisers and future sponsors.

Importantly, in keeping with the class vision and direction, the owners association with its executives will still have the utmost of control over the direction of the class. Simon's role will ensure that these initiatives and directions are moved forward for class direction and owners benefits.

The Sydney 32 class will progressively be incorporated into this format for
the same class benefits and strength.’
