For the first two rounds of the ThunderCats RYA National Championships, which took place in Watergate Bay, Newquay, over the weekend of 19-20 May, the results are in.
The atmosphere was electric throughout the weekend as Team Microlink and Peter’s and May raced neck and neck in the Pro Stock series, with the win eventually going to Team Microlink who clinched first place in both rounds reaching impressive speeds of 82 kph. While in the Stock series it was Team Wales who claimed first place.
Driver and navigator, Shaun Fisher and Grant Pittard of Team Microlink commented that the result was unexpected: 'We’re really surprised at the result as we’ve been having a few issues, but we went for consistency which seems to have paid off.'
The pair added: 'We will be going back to the drawing board ahead of the next round though'.
Fiona Pascoe, heads of ThunderCat Racing was extremely pleased with the success of the weekend and looks forward to coming back to Newquay later in the year: 'This weekend has been wonderful and so has the reception we received from Watergate Bay. We’re all looking forward to coming back here in September and then on to Falmouth in October as ThunderCat racing gets’ bigger and better.'
ThunderCats’ sponsor, Microlink also demonstrated their new product the ‘Ubi Duo’; a communication device that assists the deaf. A special presentation of the device was made to a class of teenagers from an Exeter boarding school for the hearing impaired.
The teenagers were also invited on to the beach and introduced to the drivers and shown the speedboats. A media production team, made up creative event management, journalism and photography students from University College Falmouth also attended the event to cover the weekends racing.
Made up of two race categories, Pro Stock being the highest level, where racers have the advantage of tweaking and enhancing their engines and Stock being the intermediate level; ThunderCats is a high speed, extreme sport, with a renowned series of powerboat teams that have competed worldwide gaining many titles.
