Rescuer and Survivor take on Melbourne to Apollo Bay race

by Jeff Dusting on 17 May 2012
The last time the crew were together - returning from the rescue in Bass Strait - Melbourne to Port Fairy Warrnambool Standard
They're back! Fresh from their adventures in the Melbourne to Port Fairy race, Jeff Dusting and Grant Dunoon are tackling the 2012 Melbourne to Apollo Bay race this weekend.

Jeff says, 'I have a love of sailing, and when Grant asked me to join the crew for the Apollo Bay race, I jumped at the chance to sail with these guys - under better circumstances than last time!'

Grant has nominated Jeff as the honorary skipper for the race, he says, 'Jeff showed himself a great skipper in crisis and since the rescue, we've all developed a friendship, one we hope will grow as we sail together.

The Sinking of Inception, M2PF Easter 2012: The offshore race, Melbourne to Port Fairy, traverses some of the world’s most challenging waters. When an unforecast gale hit the fleet on the evening of April 6th (Good Friday) the consequences were severe. Inception, having lost its life raft, foundered in deep waters and sank suddenly, leaving Jeff Dusting and his crew of five to survive in the cold and treacherous waters off Port Campbell for more than two hours.

In an un-precedented rescue at sea, Grant Dunoon and the crew of Try Booking drew upon Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Ocean Racing Club of Victoria resources to locate and then manoeuvre to pluck the crew from the water. All six crew survived.

The Melbourne to Apollo Bay Race: The Melbourne to Apollo Bay yacht race is a 54 nautical mile race from Queenscliff to Apollo Bay. The race departs at 6:30 am this Saturday, with the first yachts expected to arrive six to seven hours later. ORCV website
