The Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) in Shorncliffe is once again hosting the Vintage Yacht Regatta during the Queen’s Birthday weekend (9th to 11th June). The regatta, in its 37th year is a highlight of the classic yachting sailing calendar and attracts a large fleet of beautifully turned out vessels from yesteryear.

A fleet of around 40 of South East Queensland’s finest vintage yachts is expected at the event which is not just a 'show and tell' event according to Regatta Director Nigel Statham, 'The five races, sailed off Shorncliffe Headland each day, really allow these graceful yachts to spread their canvas'.

While most yachts will be vying for handicap trophies such as the Ted Rice Shield, the rivalry is equally fierce for line honours victory, and the Deagon Slipways Trophy and Australiawide Boat Sales Trophy. Two races are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday with a mixture of triangle and windward/leeward courses being used. These four races will make up the core regatta. On Monday morning the event concludes with an optional pursuit race.

In addition to action on the water most skippers were equally determined to win the best presented trophies, such as the converted Albert Jeays Trophy.

On Saturday evening, the Club hosts The Satellites to keep the crews entertained. With mix of soul, crispy New Orleans funk, infectious Latin and reggae rhythm n blues, and a pinch of jazz The Satellites are one of Australia's hottest bands right now. The Satellites are made up of four of Queensland's best musicians including David Orr guitar and vocals, Chris Pearson on bass and vocals, Anthony Aggs on keyboards and Mark Henman on drums. The Satellites play an assortment of classic and upbeats tunes with diverse genre backgrounds from Ray Charles, Poets of rhythm, Led Zeppelin, Roofus, John Scofield, as well as a handful of original music as well.

The regatta is open to all boats designed or built 30 years ago, as well as any other sailing craft that could reasonably be considered to be of a vintage design. Eligible vessels not wishing to race, may participate as part of a display at the Club, or on the water as spectators.

Yacht owners and spectators interested in the event can find full information at the Regatta website.
