Youngsta is racing in Division 1 - Derwent Sailing Squadrons Autumn Short-handed Series Rob Cruse
Derwent Sailing Squadron’s Autumn Short-handed Series third race was held on Hobart’s River Derwent on Sunday 6th May. Two wins out of three has given a pointscore lead to every yacht at the top of their division.
On a day of fickle breezes, with many windless patches, the good guys seemed to come out on top last Sunday, with handicap winners in four divisions also leading the fleet home.
Picking where the breeze was coming from, or going, was the keynote to success for the crew of two on each boat, and those who did it best came out in first place. Planet X, sailed by Mike Rowley and his crew, did well to win Division 2, as did Mem (Paul Boutchard) in Division 2, Toll Shipping (Nick Rogers) in Division 3 and Quebrada (Tim Maddock) in Division 3.
They each finished first in fleet and first on corrected time. The exception was in Division 4 where Quebrada (Tim Maddock) finished fifth in fleet, first on handicap, to hold overall first place.
After three of the five races in the Short-Handed Series, Fang to the Max (Fred Barrett) leads Division 1 with a fourth place on Sunday after two straight wins. Fang to the Max is on six points, Planet X on nine points with WA Cromarty Engineers (Steve Harrison) back on 17 points after missing Sunday’s race.
Mem’s win on Sunday consolidated her position in Division 2, with nine points on the board, comfortably clear of Just Jones (Peter Giblin) on 11 points and Pierette (Gary Kennedy) and Wildfire (Jon Ettershank) both on 12 points.
In Division 3, comprising SB20s (previously called SB3s) three boats are all on eight points. Nick Rogers scored his first win with his newly launched boat, again called Toll Shipping but with a 1-6-1 scorecard holds first place overall on a countback of placings. Balios (Peter Langford) with a 2-2-4 score is placed second with Hypertronics (Stephen Catchpool) third with a 3-3-2 scorecard.
In Division 4, Quebrada’s win on Sunday was the second in a row, giving it a total of five points, with Serenity (Graham Hall) second overall on seven points and Portobello (Ian Johnston) third on 11 points,
With two wins followed by a second on Sunday, Vistula (Greg Biskup) leads Division 5 with four points, five points clear of Street Car (Peter Bingham) on ninth points, with Another Toy (Greg Rowlings) third on 10 points after winning on Sunday.
