South Passage- an opportunity not to be missed!

South Passage under sail SW
Love sailing - or even the idea of it - and want to get some experience on a traditional sailing ship? This might be your opportunity, sailing the eastern coastline of Australia.

South Passage is a 100 foot long, gaff rigged schooner. She was purpose built in 1993 to give young people aged 14 to 17 a unique experience at sea. Most of the voyages have so far been with high school groups, though many youth organisations also sail with on the ship. Our voyages qualify for the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards.

Her home port is Manly near Brisbane and her annual sailing program takes her north to Cairns in winter and south to Wollongong in summer.

On most days during the year South Passage sails with teenagers, but there are opportunities for anyone to sail on her and enjoy the thrill and adventure of sailing on a traditional sailing ship.

You can join them for a public day sail or on cruises for special events such as Riverfire or Australia Day in Brisbane or Boxing Day or New Year’s Eve in Sydney Harbour.

They run five voyages for the general public each year, ranging from three days to eight days, so you can really experience a life at sea in a replica nineteenth century sailing ship.

Here's the program from now for 2012:

7 days, Cairns / Cairns, June 30th – July 6th
$950 Student
$1050 Adult

5 days, Hervey Bay to Manly, October 1st – 5th
$700 Student
$750 Adult

All prices include GST, nutritious meals, insurance, bunk style accommodation, certificate and adventure manual. Most voyages are conducted during school holiday dates, but that doesn't mean you have to be a student to take advantage of these adventure sailing opportunities.

About South Passage:
South Passage is run by a not for profit volunteer organisation and they are always looking for people to work with them. You do not need to be a sailor as the South Passage crews will show you the ropes aboard their unique ship.

To inquire about either of the above voyages, contact the South Passage office on (07) 3893 3777 , or email admin@southpassage.org.au. More information is to be found on www.southpassage.org.au
