Mirror and Topper Open at Ripon SC

by Ripon SC on 6 Apr 2012
Mirror-Topper Open 2012 SW
Despite the questionable forecast, 33 helms were greeted by fine conditions and a strengthening wind from the NW. Out of the 33 helms on the day, 26 Toppers took part with a fantastic turnout of squad sailors as well as 11 Ripon boats on the water.

The first race at 11.00 am caught a few late starters on the hop, but despite this the likes of Katie Phillips and others worked their way through the fleet to get a top five finish in the first race, with Joe Henderson from Sunderland YC taking the top spot.

The next two races were just as competitive with both having to have general recalls at the start. In the second race Joss Noble from Ullswater YC took first place closely followed by Katie Phillips and Georgie Mackenzie, both from Ripon SC that meant it was all to play for in the last race.

Again it was very close coming down the last leg of the race with positions changing all the time, but the top spot finally went to Joseph Trotter from Derwent Res SC followed by James Mckenzie from Ripon SC and Joss Noble from Ullswater SC.

Overall there was some superb sailing on display with Joseph Trotter taking the overall first prize with Joss Noble second and Robin Jones from Hykeham SC taking third prize.

Turning to the Mirrors - again there was some excellent sailing on display throughout the day. In the first race Emma and Rachel Grayson from Beaver SC got off to a great start and created a commanding lead to take top spot in the first race followed by David and Daniel Coady from Derwent Res SC second and Henry and Jamie Rastrick from Ripon SC third. In the second race it was all much closer, but again the Grayson came out on top with David and Daniel Coady second and Rob Dean from Beaver SC third.

Despite the fact that the Grayson had secured overall top spot, the third race was still just as thrilling to watch as Henry Rastrick tried to secure an overall second spot, having found a replacement crew due to illness. Henry took an lead early and held on to it all the way though the race, but was pipped at the post by Emma and Rachel as a result of their superb spinnaker work down the last leg of the race.

Again there was some great sailing on display throughout the day with Emma and Rachel Grayson taking first prize, David and Daniel Coady second and Henry Rastrick and Alister Scott third. Big thank you goes to the race officers, galley, Helen Grayson for the photos and everyone else who made the day so enjoyable.
