RS-X World Windsurfing Championships - Who are the fans betting on?

by Rory Ramsden on 19 Mar 2012
The Fans are Betting on Nimrod and Lee - RS:X World Windsurfing Championships 2012 SW
RS:X World Windsurfing Championships are to be held in the Bay of Cadiz from 21 to 28 March 2012.

Olympic windsurfing is big in Israel. Out the six medals won by athletes for their country, at least three have been in windsurfing so it's not surprising that windsurfing fans in Israel are so passionate about their stars.

As always we ran a quick poll of the nearly 5000 fans on the RS:X World Windsurfing Championships Facebook page to find out what they were thinking. There's money at stake this time after all. The winner will not only be the RS:X World Champion but also he or she will be US $6,500 richer too.

The clear winner in the RS:X men's fleet is Nimrod Mashiah [ISR21 - 198 votes] who took the bronze medal at the ISAF Sailing World Championships just three months ago in Perth, Western Australia. The current world champion, Dorian van Rijsselberge [NED8 - 89 votes] was voted second most likely winner so if the scores counted on March 28th are the same, he would 'only' take home US $4,750.

Over in the RS:X women's fleet the margin of victory is just as large for Lee Korzits [ISR1111 - 161 votes] over her 'sister' by another mother, Zofia Klepacka [POL8 - 73 votes] These two finished in exactly the same order in Perth so they will have to sort it out between themselves again.

Marina Alabau [ESP5 - 22 votes] will certainly have something to say about that next Wednesday when racing starts for real. She will after all be racing in 'mi casa' and will not be in the mood for compromise especially as this is the last big race before the 2012 Olympic Sailing Regattas in Weymouth... never mind the money.

Racers start scrutineering and registering their equipment serial numbers on Wednesday March 21st. There's a quick practice race too to make sure that the Race Committee is on song, then we get down to the real business of racing on Thursday. The event microsite will go live on Wednesday as RS:X World Windsurfing Championships microsite
