ISAF Match Racing Clinic at the RHKYC from 28 April to 1 May 2012

by Richard Knight on 15 Mar 2012
ISAF Match Racing Umpire Clinic Hong Kong 2012 Richard Knight
An ISAF Match Racing Clinic will be conducted at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club from 28 April to 1 May 2012.

An ISAF clinic provides an effective springboard to launch match racing in a region in a way that will be consistent with match racing and umpiring around the world.

The clinic provides a balance between classroom sessions and real umpiring on the water, all lead by ISAF IU Instructors. Depending on the number of applicants for this event the instructors will be Sally Burnett (GBR) and Marianne Middelthon (NOR).

Course Schedule
Friday 27 April 1800hrs @ Kellett Island Reception for all participants
Saturday 28 April 0900hrs – 1700hrs @ Middle Island Class room and on the water skills
Sunday 29 April 0900hrs – 1800hrs @ Middle Island On the water judging practice
Monday 30 April 1800hrs – 2100hrs @ Kellett Island Class room review session
Tuesday 1 May 0900hrs – 1800hrs @ Middle Island On the water judging practice and final de-brief

As the clinic will take place at the 2012 BNP Paribas Hong Kong Match Racing Nationals a major part of the clinic will be connected to that event. The participants at the clinic will be umpiring, while being coached by the instructors. They may also take part in other aspects of the regatta.

The clinic gives no formal qualifications; there are no tests or assessments - only plenty of coaching and learning opportunities. However, the clinic is a tool and after taking part in a clinic, you will be able to umpire, sometimes with a more experienced umpire, and to continue developing your umpiring skills. With more practice, it is possible to continue umpiring and to eventually enough experience and practice to take an IU seminar and maybe become an ISAF International Umpire.

The clinic is open for sailors and/or judges who are interested in learning more about match racing and umpiring. There are no requirements for pre-qualifications - however, it is important that you are familiar with sailing and it is easier if you know something about The Racing Rules of Sailing.

Visitors and Non- RHKYC Members
ABC and HHYC will be able to use their own accounts to sign and non-members will be issued a student card to enable them to use their personal Octopus card for Food and Beverage during the course period at the venues identified above. Overseas participants may apply for visitor membership to the RHKYC during their stay. If you require additional assistance (eg, information regarding accommodation etc) please contact richard.knight(at)rhkyc.org.hk
