Invitation to Hemingway International Yacht Club's 20th birthday.

by Nancy Knudsen on 3 Jan 2012
Sailing Cuba has always been a tantalising idea SW
Cuba, long denied to American citizen sailors, has been an alluring destination for all other nationalities. And in spite of the bar on American visitors, the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba has prospered, under the guidance of its commodore, Diaz Escrich. Now this venerated club is turning 20, wants to celebrate, and is inviting all cruising sailors - no matter where you live - to share the celebrations, with the following invitation:

On May 21st, 2012, the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba (HIYC of Cuba) will have its 20th Anniversary, because of this, you and the International sailing community is invited by Commodore Diaz Escrich to participate at the activities that will be held before and after the above mentioned date.

The first activity in salute to the 20th Anniversary was the attempt by American Diana Nyad to swim across the Straits of Florida between Havana and Key West.

Optimist, Laser, Hobby Cat and cruising boat races, jet ski, canoes and kayak races, a shore fishing tournament at Havana Seafront and other nautical events will take place as well.

In the schedule, stand out the academicals events such as:
•The Workshop '80 Years of Nautical Relations USA-Cuba. Present and Perspectives', on April 26th.

• The Conference 'Nautical Recreation in Cuba. Present and future development'. By Commodore Escrich, on May 19th.

• The Conference 'Climate Change and The Migration of the Billfish Species. Circle Hook Instructional Presentation and Tagging Research', on May 28th. This day also starts the 62th 'Ernest Hemingway' International Billfish Fishing Tournament. At midday of April 27, the 20th Anniversary of HIYC of Cuba Cruising will take place from Marina Hemingway to Havana Morro Castle, in remembrance to the participants in the Tampa-Havana Race, on March 1930.

• On May 21st, at 20:00 hours, the HIYC of Cuba and its members will dress up to receive with great pleasure all friends, and members of the International sailing community.

The participation of you and members of the International sailing Community will be a token of friendship, support and recognition to this Cuban yacht club that has been very important for us all along these 20 years.

It will be a pleasure for the Board of Director and members of HIYC of Cuba to welcome you, all friends and members of the International sailing community.
