GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the owner of Giant hypermarket and retail chain in Malaysia, will continue its loyal partnership with the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) by supporting and joining on board as a Silver Sponsor for the Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2012.

With its entry into the 10th edition of RLIR 2012, Giant continues to prove its commitment to the regatta and play a key role in aligning to its overall corporate values.

The RLIR 2012, which is scheduled to take place from ninth to 14th January 2012 in Kuah, Langkawi, is organised by the RLYC and sanctioned by the Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA – The National Authority), a member of the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia.

The RLIR 2012 is the 10th regatta to be held since its inception in 2003 and it has attracted regular competitors from around the globe. Sailors and participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Holland, United Kingdom, United States of America, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, France, Belgium, South Korea and Malaysia have registered for the event in January.

'This is truly one of the most popular international sailing events in the region, and Giant is proud to be part of this effort to foster good sportsmanship among the world’s best sailors and sailing communities, which is soon to take place on the legendary island of Langkawi,' said Dato’ John Coyle, Regional Director, East Asia, Dairy Farm International.

Dato' John Coyle and Giant’s Non-Executive Chairman, Dato' Mohamad Salim Bin Fateh Din presented the sponsorship cheque to Y.T.M Dato' Seri DiRaja Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, Vice Commodore of RLYC, at a cheque presentation ceremony held at Subang Jaya, on Friday, 23 December 2011. The Rear Commodore of RLYC and Chairperson of Regatta Advisory Committee Y.M. Tunku Soraya Dakhlah binti Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah witnessed the cheque presentation ceremony.

'RLYC wishes to express our gratitude to Giant Hypermarket for their continuous support in making RLIR a great success and we look forward to working in partnership with them for many years to come', said Tunku Soraya.

'The sponsorship will play a vital role in ensuring the success of this premier sailing event in the region. We believe that the regatta has an incredible potential to attract more local and foreign tourists alike to the island, given its reputable name and standing in the sailing community. Consequently, this creates a platform for Langkawi to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most widely recognised islands and tourist destinations,' added Tunku Soraya.

Teams participating in the RLIR 2012 will compete for the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy (internationally registered yachts), the Commodore’s Challenge Cup (club-registered cruisers), 'LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy' (IRC Class – boats issued with a sailing handicap), Langkawi Sports Trophy (Sports Boat Class) and the Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup (Multihull).

Grand Final not run yet, but our Hobart coverage begins with something very cool Maybe a tad earlier than last year, which I think was after the Grand Final, but the 100th entrant seemed like a good place to set things off. Now with that said, Sail-World's Hobart coverage begins.
