Camper stamps its coastal pedigree via sailing and sponsorship

by Jeni Bone on 20 Dec 2011
CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand race yacht is splashed for ther first time. 11/4/2011 Camper
Long a partner in sailing and other cultural and recreational pursuits, the brand Camper has a fascinating history. For four generations, the Spanish brand has been synonymous with fashion-forward footwear based on old-fashioned craftsmanship and values.

The very name indicates its heritage, 'camper' meaning 'peasant' in Catalan. Speaking exclusively with MarineBusiness-World.com, Dalia Saliamonas, Project Director of the Camper Volvo Ocean Race activity reveals a little more about Camper’s involvement in the Volvo Ocean Race.

* What are the brand attributes of Camper?

The Camper brand designs and creates shoes based on values of design and comfort with imagination, where we strive to deliver unique products to our fans.

* How does ocean racing fit with the Camper brand?

Camper has a long relationship with the world of sailing where we have participated in various facets of the sport from 3/4 ton to Spanish national Championships, to the Copa del Rey, audi medcup, and it is a natural fit for us as Camper is from Mallorca in the heart of the Mediterranean, which is our constant inspiration.

* What are the main objectives of sponsorship of the Volvo Ocean Race?

Of course, our objectives are to sail to win! But we as a company are proud to take part in this premium event, and hopefully it will be a positive vehicle to bring brand awareness on a global level.

* How will you be judging Return on Investment (ROI)?

ROI is viewed clearly in communication mainly in international TV coverage.

* Have you extended the range to support your foray into sailing?

Yes indeed we have! We have a very attractive range of team merchandise available at camper.com

* What markets are your most significant globally?

Camper is very strong in Europe and Asia mainly and having healthy growth in other areas. We have some 300 shops worldwide and over 3000 of the finest retailers world wide.

* How do Australia and NZ perform?

Australia is not our biggest market but it is really very healthy and we are very proud of our shops and our loyal customer base and recently we have launched the Eshop in Australia and New Zealand.

* Will you be continuing your association with Sailing beyond 2012?

We have already extended our commitment with sailing and are elite sponsors of the Americas Cup which runs through 2013

* What other sporting and cultural sponsorships does the Camper brand support?

We have many activities we are involved in on local levels however our commitment with both the Volvo Ocean Race and the Americas Cup are targets on our radar now.
