More and more of Australia’s best anglers are turning to Mercury outboards because of their unmatched reliability, according to the country’s leading tournament organiser.
'We run a lot of competitions so it’s fairly easy to spot trends,' said Simon Goldsmith,
Tournament Director at Australian Bass Tournaments (ABT).
'Anglers are increasingly turning towards Mercury for their reliability and performance; at last count over 60% of our guys were running them.
'For eight years now, Mercury has been happy to put its money behind tournament fishing and I think everyone who’s into competitive fishing would like to thank them for that,' he said.
'But that doesn’t mean they’ve bought this trend. The fact is they’ve got the products which our anglers recognise as critical to their tournament success.'
Mercury’s 'Bonus Bucks' prize scheme has been operating in the ABT’s BREAM series since 2007.
This year Mercury added to that by initiating the Mercury Cup for the season’s highest ranking points scorer with a Mercury engine.
The inaugural Cup and $1,000 prize money was claimed by was Taree breamer Russell Babekuhl.
Mercury was the dominant force throughout the BREAM season with five out of the top 10 ranked BREAM anglers running a Mercury outboard, including the top four ranked anglers - Babekuhl, Steve Morgan, Kris Hickson and Darren Borg.
'Mercury’s sponsorship money goes to the best placed angler with a Mercury outboard, but more and more often that’s the tournament winner anyway,' Simon said.
