Webcam on Swansea Bar

by Larry Baker on 7 Mar 2003
Over the years lives have been lost, countless boats rolled over, sunk or smashed up on the rocks of the break walls at Swansea Heads. Many thousands of dollars worth of vessels and equipment have been lost and many people injured on this treacherous section of water.

In more recent times our rescue organizations have become better equipped, better trained and have considerably faster response times. This means many lives have been saved.

Coast Guard Swansea, being positioned on the southern headland above the Swansea Bar, and having a boat shed just inside the channel, has for a long time searched for a way to make the boating public aware of the dangers they may encounter each time they cross the Swansea Bar.

The Coast Guards motto “Safety By All Means” keeps us always on the lookout for ways to improve boating

In the light of changing technology this opportunity presented itself and as an ideal safety initiative, Coast Guard Swansea approached Michael Garnham from Stickybeek.com.au and asked for their assistance to bring this unique service to the boating public.

Stickybeek immediately saw the importance of this idea and threw their full support behind it. Stickybeek’s focus is to bring the local business sector and the community closer together.

They do this by combining both on the one very popular web site. You can find a local park to have a picnic, check out who was out and about on the town or in the restaurants last week, buy a car, a boat or a house. You can sight see our area or look at live web cams of selected sites around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

After 12 noon on Thursday the 6th March 2003 and thanks to Stickybeek, Pacific Yachting and Coast Guard Swansea you can check the conditions on the Swansea Bar via our web cam, check the tide and weather in the area on the Coast Guard link, all before you leave home.

Go to stickybeek.com.au select web cams then select Swansea Bar.

For the weather, click on the Coast Guard logo and select Weather and Tides and use 2281 as post code for Swansea.
