Sydney yachtsman Chris Oh has been appointed Sailing Manager of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania after ‘migrating’ south to the island state.

Chris this week took up duties at the Derwent-side club, taking over from Richard Scarr, with Vice Commodore Roger Martin standing in until Chris took over.

Scarr resigned to concentrate on his state and national coaching duties, including that of Matt Bugg in his bid to represent Australia at the London Paralympics Games next year.

Recently retired from the NSW public service, Chris had bought a property at Middleton ad was keen to continue his association with yachting, having been a longtime and active member of the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club.

He raced the Nelson 32 Classic Blue with success at the Amateurs, but has also raced offshore in other boats, including 14 races to Lord Howe Island and a dozen Sydney Hobarts. He crewed on Mark Twain when it became the first boat to sail in 25 Hobart races.

During his membership of the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club he served as Vice-Commodore, race committee chairman and safety officer.

Commodore Graham Taplin officially welcomed Chris Oh as sailing manager, introducing him to club directors, committee members and race officers at a morning function at the club today.
