Sara Winther reports ahead of the Olympic Qualifiers in Perth

by Sara Winther on 24 Nov 2011
Sara Winther (NZL) wins the Gold medal in the Womens Singlehander (Laser Radial) - Semaine Olympique Francais 2011 Guillaume Durand

NZL Sailing Team member, Sara Winther reports ahead of the ISAF World Sailing Championships in Perth, Australia, which starts on 3 December. The regatta is the principal Qualifier for the 2012 Olympics in London. 75% of the available Olympic places will be allocated at this regatta.

Back in NZ for just 10 day days after competing the Sail Melbourne World Cup, it was a good chance to freshen up before heading back to Perth for the ISAF Sailing World Championships.

It has been one of the few times this year that I have been able to just chill out and just get everything in place for the regatta.

While I opted out of the North Islands in New Plymouth, my coach Marko went down and I looked after his dog, rabbit, fish and house…I think they all survived! I made use of his Torbay beach location and went paddle-boarding and generally relaxed – as much as the dog let me!

Again I am at the airport writing this, and looking forward to getting over there again and beginning the build up to the regatta.

I will be reunited with Team Jolly (Jo and Polly) as we are all sharing a house, alsoAndrew Murdoch, Natalia, and Carl Evans are with us. No doubt we will have some good discussion on what is the hardest Olympic class to win a medal at the Olympic in – if course it’s the laser class!

Anyway, I would just like to say a huge thanks to everyone – sponsors, YNZ, NZHPS providers, my family and all my friends and fellow laser sailors for all your help and support this year. It has been a long year, so looking forward to putting it all together in Perth and finishing the year off strong.

Well that’s it from here at the Air NZ airport (who just charged me $40 to take my boom to Perth !!) -
