Richard Mason takes us below deck on Team Sanya to reveal the gaping hole that nearly sank them after striking an unidentified object on the opening night of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.
Shows the extent of the damage inside the hull, and the realisation of how close the VOR70 must have been to sinking.
Fortuitously her crew had closed the watertight door as a precautionary measure before the incident.
The plan is for her to be shipped to Capetown, South Africa. A new section of hull fitted, and it is hoped that she will rejoin the fleet for Leg 2.
