Sydney’s fleet of International Ynglings has expanded rapidly this season.

The 44th Yngling World Championship, to take place from 3-8 January 2012, will be hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

The Yngling Worlds will be one of two world championships the Squadron will host in the New Year to mark the 150th anniversary of its foundation, the other international regatta being the worlds for the International Etchells class from 18-25 February 2011.

The keen competition in the Yngling fleet was underlined in last Saturday’s mini regatta and top-up selection series conducted by the Squadron on the harbour.

In the lead-up to the Worlds, the Ynglings have a busy season with the Squadron conducting the Australian championship on 5-6 November, the King Haakons Cup series on 10 December and the Christmas Regatta Yngling Youth and Open Regatta on 27-29 December.

This will be the third time the Squadron has hosted the Yngling Worlds and a fleet of 42 is expected, of which 22 will be Australians. Entries are anticipated from Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Austria, Sweden, Norway and possibly New Zealand and Canada.

Saturday’s mini regatta was dominated by Mel Nathan and Michael Nash’s YAUS57 with three wins, but competition was close in all three heats.

Street Hassle (Adrian Nash) sailed consistently, finishing second to YAUS57 in the first two races, third in the third. Miss Pibb (Hamish Jarrett and Frederico Lauro) had a 4-3-2 scorecard, finishing only 13 seconds astern of YAUS57 in the last race.

Former Olympic sailor Karyn Gojnich, helming Evie, was a close contender throughout the mini regatta with a 3-4-4 scorecard.
