On the final day of the Etchells World Championship in Rosignano, Tuscany, Italy, there was no wind and therefore no racing action at the Yacht Club Cala de’ Medici. After eight races out of the nine scheduled the winner is 'The Martian' skippered by American helmsman Marvin Beckmann, from Houston, sailing with tactician Steven Hunt and Ezra Culver.

'Our success was mainly due to consistancy– said Beckmann after the last race was abandoned for lack of wind – provided by our tactician and the team work and chemistry of the team we kept in fun. The competition was stiff with many countries good veteran sailors. We got a good jump the first day of racing and able to build on that. The last few days of racing were variable allowing different teams to show their strengths. In the end we were able to mintain our lead.'

Marvin 'The Martian' Beckmann (cartoons character he was used to watch at TV when he was a child) adds now to his personal roll of honors a new smart result after winning recently the Jaguar Cup in Miami and the North American Championship.

In the final results the second ranked boat is 'Raging Rooster' skippered by American Peter S. Dunkan with Olympic champion Judson Smith and bowman Thomas Blackwell.

'Swedish Blu' skippered by European champion Ante Razmilovich (Hong Kong) together with American Chris Larson and Stuart Flinn got the third place.
