Three top yacht-friendly provinces in Italy named.

Marina in Viareggio, Lucca, top ’yacht-friendly’ coastline SW
If you are thinking - or even dreaming - of sailing the Italian coastline any time soon, you'll want to file away in your memory box that the coastline of Lucca has just topped the bill as the most yacht-friendly in Italy, followed by Genoa and Matera (see map below).

UCINA, Italy's professional association of the yachting industry, has recently come out with a 'Nautical Quality Index' of Italy's 62 coastal provinces, with just four criteria: Availability of marinas and moorings, Quality of marina services, Other tourist services available and Accessibility.

This index was developed by Osservatorio Nautico Nazionale (the Italian Boating Sector Observatory).

Three sub-indicators were identified as regards the availability of marinas and moorings: the density of marinas, the number of berths for the residents, and the percentage of marinas against the total number of harbour facilities.

Three sub-indicators were identified with respect to the quality of marina services: possibility to host pleasure vessels, availability of dedicated services, availability of refitting services.

Three sub-indicators were defined as far as other sea-related tourist services are concerned: the number of diving centres, the presence of Italian Sailing Federation members, and the presence of marine protected areas;

Last but not least, two sub- indicators regard accessibility & flows: road accessibility and the berth demand/supply ratio.

The most yachting-friendly Italian province was Lucca, followed by Genoa and Matera, the latter ranking high thanks to two important marinas, the Marina di Policoro and the Porto degli Argonauti, both located along a limited stretch of coast.
