Sydney 38 One Design fleet now growing in Europe

by Rob Kothe on 24 Feb 2003
The first Sydney 38 to sail on the Mediterranean caused a considerable stir, with her light air performance, when she finished an impressive 2nd in the large IMS division in the Rolex 50th Anniversary 2002 Giraglia race from San Tropez in France to Genova.

The European sailing community were most impressed by the speed and design of the Sydney 38 with her large colourful wheel and spacious layout, both for dining and racing.

There has been continuing interest in Europe since the Sydney 38 was first introduced and Sydney Yachts Martin Thompson announced today the formation of a new division ‘Sydney Yachts Europe’.

‘The Australian boat builder has committed to the large Europe sailing scene after considerable successes in the U.S. market. ‘

Thompson explains ‘The establishment of Sydney Yachts Europe will allow us to better deliver our south ocean proven Sydney Yachts range to this important market.’

‘The second and third Sydney 38 One Designs will be soon racing in the Mediterranean and this growing fleet will lift our profile.’

‘Ultimately our real advantage is the fact, that we can deliver boats from the Sydney 32 and 38’s One Design, the 36’s, 40’s, 41’s and 46’s which offer features packaged very attractively for the European market-place.’

‘We are also pleased that within Europe, there is increasing recognition that Sydney Yachts Custom Boat Division is a very competitive, cost effective boat builder, with a World Class, ISO 9002 certified manufacturing facility.’

‘The establishment of the new Sydney Yachts Europe operation will allow us to work more closely with designer and clients and we expect a steady flow of orders from this major market.’
