Yacht Feature- Bavaria 32 - a fresh look for 2012

by Des Ryan on 2 Oct 2011
Bavaria 32 cruising SW
Bavaria yachts in the past have not enjoyed a universal admiration, but the 2012 versions are showing a fresh outlook on their designs and construction, with new designers apparently starting with a clean slate.

The newly designed Cruiser 32 seems a good all-round design for a wide range of activities - cruising, weekending, family fun, and club racing.

Two couples will fit comfortably, or a family with up to three kids can spend time aboard without bumping into each other too much. For those who want to do a little racing as well, the boat's performance will offer good possibilities. Value-for-money is excellent, priced at around $180,000.

It was launched in Europe late last year as part of a roll-out of several new models - the 36, 40 and 45 models. The new boats are being designed by Farr Yacht Design, together with BMW Group DesignworksUSA and Bavaria’s own design team.

Features:

The decks are uncluttered with only the halyards and reefing lines led aft and as with the entire range, the conventional mainsail can be reefed single handed, without leaving the cockpit, and without coming head to wind, thanks to Seldens excellent single line slab reefing system. The high aspect headsail is efficiently reefed by the outstandingly efficient and reliable Selden 200S furling unit.

A deep, strong-looking lattice sub-frame hides under the cabin sole of the Farr-designed Cruiser 32 and the keel bolts pass through large plates.

A self-tacker is optional. The slightly overlapping, furling jib is sheeted via coachroof-mounted cars on inboard tracks, with the leech pulling up just short of the spreaders. A shortish J-length is effectively increased by long, swept-back spreaders. There is a wide shroud base, with chainplates on the hull.

The yacht also has a bathing platform which spans the width of the attractively designed stern. It is manually lowered and raised on the Cruiser 32 model, but with ingenious counter balancing, and sturdy hinges, it is an effortless exercise. The instruments and leather bound wheel are mounted on a central binnacle.

Rig is almost masthead, but with sufficient clearance above the jib head for spinnaker halyards to emerge without the risk of tangling with the jib furler.

The cockpit coamings have Code 0 or spinnaker winch pads already inbuilt. There are also two foredeck pads that can mount a removable bowsprit, from which an asymmetric spinnaker can be flown.

Interior:

The new Cruiser 32 leads its class for interior space. The raised coach roof, achieves two goals. It gives 6 foot of headroom in the salon, and it gives protection to the aft cockpit which has a relatively raised cockpit floor. This in turn gives more space and headroom in the aft cabin, below the cockpit. Two large central hatches and six opening port-lights provide an abundance of natural light. The two cabins, fore and aft, have accommodation more usually associated with a 36 footer. The modern saloon and galley area, stylishly equipped, combine to create an atmosphere of sophisticated simplicity.

With interior joinery available in bosse mahogany, oak or walnut, and with 11 styles of upholstery to choose from, this spacious and ergonomic yacht can be customized to the individual requirements of the client.
