YNZ NEWS2011 Yachting Excellence Awards – Finalists and Winners announcedYachting New Zealand is pleased to announce the 2011 Award winners and category finalists for the esteemed Yachting Excellence Awards.

The big winner, 2011 Singapore Airlines Sailor of the Year, will be revealed at the 2011 Yachting Excellence Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner on the evening of Friday 28th October at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland.
The historic Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy, engraved with a long list of New Zealand’s big names in yachting, will be presented and category sponsor Singapore Airlines will be there to hand over an exciting travel prize. Tickets are on sale now.
2011 Young Sailor of the Year and 2011 Coach/Official of the Year will also be announced on the night, from a list of finalists named below. The winner of Young Sailor and Coach/Official will be presented with a prize from category sponsor Orbit Travel Auckland.
Ten Performance Awards, ten Service Awards, two Cruising Awards and the winner of the 2011 Emerging Talent Award have been announced today.
“This year’s Gala Dinner is shaping up to be an exciting event,” says Yachting New Zealand Chief Executive, David Abercrombie. “It’s terrific to see the sport’s hard workers and high achievers rewarded for their efforts, they deserve to be congratulated.”
Great spot prizes are up for grabs on the night including a two night accommodation package for two from Millennium Hotels and Resorts, subscriptions to Boating New Zealand magazine, Harken gear bags and more.

Read it on-line here. Katy Kenah named SPARC Volunteer of the Year Hawke’s Bay Napier Sailing Club’s Katy Kenah was this week awarded the SPARC Volunteer of the Year Award for the region of Hawkes Bay.
YNZ announced today that Katy, together with husband Mark Kenah (pictured left), will also be awarded a 2011 Yachting New Zealand Service Award
Katy has been a driving force behind the creation of Sailability Hawke’s Bay, building the organisation from scratch over the past 18 months, working entirely on a voluntary basis.
Her fund-raising work has enabled the purchase of two sailing boats and a rescue boat with her current efforts focussed on the acquisition of two Access Liberty dinghies with Servo Controls.
Sailability Hawke’s Bay can now boast 90 have-a-go and 22 regular sailing members largely due to the significant efforts of Katy and Mark who are regularly there to make it happen.

Obituary: Alan Poore Alan Poore (pictured in action at left), a Life Member of Charteris Bay Yacht Club passed away on the 17th September after a long illness.
Alan and his wife Dianne have had a long association with CBYC from when they were young children. In the 1950’s he sailed P Class and then moved on to sailing with his father on his 18 footer “Melody”.
Later, Alan sailed his Flying Fifteen with either Michelle his daughter or Martin his son as crew. They competed in the 1994 FF15 World Champs held in Timaru.
Alan has been Chairman of the local FF15 Class, former Commodore, Committee member, Vice President, and this year he was awarded the 2011 Mander Yachting Trust Award for Club Coach/Instructor of the Year.
Nominated by the Charteris Bay Yacht Club for a Yachting New Zealand Service Award this year, Alan has been named today in the list of Awardees.
He has been the head Learn-to-Sail coach for the past five years, bringing young sailors through to Green fleet Optimist racing and after school sailing. Michelle, his daughter, has now taken over his role as Learn to Sail coach.
Alan will be missed by his friends “CBYC Last of the Summer Wine” Wednesday maintenance gang, of which he was the youngest member. His practical skills and craftsmanship can be seen in his boat “Adagio”, a replica Logan 31, which he built and got much enjoyment from on Lyttelton Harbour.
Alan’s funeral will be held at Westpark Chapel, 467 Wairakei Rd, Burnside, 10.30am Friday 23rd September.
HIGH PERFORMANCE & INTERNATIONALNew Zealand wins ISAF Nations Cup Laurie Jury, Logan Fraser and Michael Edmonds have won the Nations Cup Grand Final. Jury and crew defeated Macgregor (GBR) 3 - 0 in the Open Division Grand Final sailing in Sheboygan, USA.

With a 2-1 lead going into race four of the open division sailed in Sonars, Jury (crew Logan Frasier, Mike Edmonds) sailed clean while top-seeded Mads Ebler (DEN, crew Soeren Toender, Chris Keene Boye) was able to clear his first penalty, but received another at the final top mark during a luffing match. Jury was able to sail ahead to the finish to win.
“We are really excited to have won the Nations Cup. It is our first Grade 1 win,” said Jury, who is on a match racing streak, winning the U.S. Grand Slam Match Race Series consisting of four grade two events. “It was really tough to get here. We had to win against the best top-ranked New Zealand and Australia match racers.”

ETNZ update after Plymouth RegattaThis from ETNZ...  Emirates Team New Zealand leads both the match racing and fleet racing sections of the America’s Cup World Series.After two regattas the team has 19 points of a possible 20 in each.
The wind was up for the last day of the Plymouth regatta last Sunday. On the programme: one 40-minute race and the title of Plymouth fleet race champion.
With the match racing championship firmly in the bag the previous day, Emirates Team New Zealand was expected to do well.
But with strong winds predicted all bets were off. Getting around the track in one piece was a priority. As it was three yachts capsized and two were in a major collision and did not finish the race.
The breeze was between 20-25 knots, with gusts to 30. The wind speed was not the problem, but its shifty and puffy character as it came off the hills was. Tactician Ray Davies said the secret of getting around the track is to keep the speed up where the breeze is more stable and crews can see the puffs coming. “We have to keep pushing – a timid approach can get you into trouble.”
Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle 4 and Oracle 5 led the fleet from the start. The lead changed hands several times and Oracle 4 led across the finish line with Dean Barker and crew close behind followed by Oracle 5.
Yachts to capsize were Energy Team (France), China Team and Artemis Racing. Artemis had previously been damaged in a collision with Green Comm Racing. Both Artemis and Green Comm retired. Aleph was also damaged in a collision with Green Comm.

JUNIOR & YOUTH SAILINGObserver opportunity at Optimist World Championships An opportunity for interested people to ‘watch and learn’ through an Observer Programme at the 2011 OptiWorlds in Napier is being considered, and organisers are seeking expressions of interest.
The aim of the Observer Programme would be to provide a rare opportunity for event professionals to study the delivery of a premier New Zealand sporting event ‘live’ and on-site. Similar Observer Programmes instigated at other major events held in New Zealand have been successful, leaving a legacy of greater skills, knowledge and experience in the community.
Racing at the OptiWorlds 2011 Regatta runs from 30 December 2011 – 8 January 2012. The event, being hosted by the Napier Sailing Club, is expected to attract more than 200 of the world’s most talented junior sailors.
Numbers may be limited and there may be travel and other costs involved – this will be determined and communicated following Expressions of Interest.

Takapuna 470 Junior World ChampsTakapuna, New Zealand is the venue for the 2012 470 Junior World Championships from 26 January-3 February 2012.
The event organizers have put together a great event package which means the cost for international sailors to travel and compete in New Zealand is amazingly affordable. With world-class competition coming to New Zealand for this event, a strong local entry list is expected.
The New Zealand yachting community can encourage international 470 sailors who are eligable to compete in the 470 Junior World Championships in Takapuna next year. Details of the event package are published here on the International 470 Class Association website.
LOCAL SAILING & NEWSRAYC will host 2012 Sail Auckland Sail Auckland Inc has announced a new venue for 2012 with the February Olympic class Regatta to be hosted by Royal Akarana Yacht Club.
The regatta is sure to draw the usual high calibre entry list, and plenty of attention given 2012 is an Olympic year. Four days of action will kick off on February 3rd and run through until February 7th.
Sail Auckland is an ISAF Grade 1 Olympic Classes Regatta - classes include RS:X, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, 420, 470, 29er, 49er, Tornado, Skud 18, Liberty and 2.4R.

Dates set for the New Zealand Open and Women’s Keelboat Nationals The New Zealand Open Keelboat Nationals will be sailed on the 3rd and 4th March 2012 out of Royal Akarana Yacht Club and the Women’s Keelboat Nationals on the 28th and 29th April 2012 out of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
Both regattas will be sailed in the MRX Fleet.Notices of Race will be out soon and entries will need to be in early to ensure acceptance.

As in previous years Murrays Bay Sailing Club invites everyone along to a pre-regatta coaching clinic. The clinic is designed to set sailors up for a new season of racing and a chance to connect with old acquaintances and make new friends from all over New Zealand.
Organizers look forward to providing some great racing on the waters off Murrays Bay and to do this have enlisted the help of top race officers Ian Clouston and Richard Brown.
