West Australian sailor David Gilmour, the son of World Match Racing icon Peter Gilmour, four times ISAF World Match Racing champion, has won the 2011 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship, defeating New South Welshman Jay Griffin in the final.

The 2011 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship was hosted by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Perth, Western Australia between September 9 and 11 with close competition across the three days of racing on the Swan River.

Griffin, representing Sydney’s Cruising Yacht Club of Australia finished at the top of the table after the round robin with eight, ahead of Gilmour, who was sailing for the host club, on six.

Griffin took on the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club crew skippered by Reece Tailby in the semi-final, with Griffin progressing to the final following a two-nil win.

The other semi-final was an all West Australian affair with Gilmour lining up against Mark Spearman, with both crews representing Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Gilmour won the best of three semi-final two-nil, moving through to take on Griffin in the final.

The final went right down to the wire with Gilmour coming out on top three wins to two in the best of five final.

Griffin got off to the best start possible, winning the opening two races before Gilmour fought back, winning the next two to force a fifth and deciding race.

The local sailor came out on top to claim the 2011 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship.

In the petite final Reece Tailby claimed the last spot on the podium with a two-nil win over Spearman.
