There is a new Commodore and General Committee after the AGM on Tuesday evening.

Matt Woodley is the new Commodore with Mike Wilson as Vice Commodore and Nathan Bonney Rear Commodore. Nathan is currently on the general committee while both Matt and Mike have served on the general committee in the past. The Club captain remains with Fendall Halliburton and the new treasurer is Craig Wilson. There were five general committee members elected they are, Murray Gilbert, Anatole Masfen, Mark Taylor, Tracy Wilson and Warren Trethewey. Special mention was made by Matt Woodley,Fendall Halliburton and Murray Gilbert on the huge amount of work Graham Jones had put into the club during the past three years as Commodore. Graham is largley responsible for the upgrade of the Neptune Lounge and bar which were full appreciated at the AGM. Graham has also worked steadfastly on the building project during a difficult financial climate in which to raise funds for major projects. There was a unamious applause for Graham and we are sure to see him at the club offering his assistance in his usual affiable manner. Great things happening at the RAYC Academy:

New boats
The Club received a grant to buy new boats to replace the Cadets. We’ve received funding for the first three RS Feva’s, an International class Dinghy. These boats are easy to handle, fun to sail, versatile and highly durable. In fact, the RS Feva was the outright world's bestselling two person sailboat in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Feva XL comes complete with a battened mainsail, jib and a gennaker. It’s a fast and exciting sailing boat. This means that the sailors of the Monday course will be sailing the Feva’s and the Cadets.

IMPORTANT: Academy sailing courses START from SATURDAY 24 SEPTEMBER
Term 4 2011 is such a short term due to the late October Holiday (because of the Rugby World Cup) that the sailing courses for Term 4 start at the end of Term 3: from Saturday 24th September. Daylight savings start on Sunday 25 September. There will be 2 sessions before the October holiday (9-25 October) and 6 sessions between Labour weekend and Christmas.

NEW: Platu 25 Youth Sailing Academy
The Academy will train and race in a fleet of 10 purpose built Platu 25 one design keelboats.
The Platu 25 is a modern light displacement high performance yacht which was specifically designed by Farr yacht design as a racing yacht suitable for teaching sailing skills and racing skills to “new sailors”. The yachts are fast and sporty with no interior fit out as it is intended for day racing only.
Applicants to join the Academy must be between the ages of 15 and 21 and they must provide a sailing C.V. and show at least 2 years of previous sailing experience with a yacht club. Each sailor accepted into the Academy shall demonstrate a genuine commitment to the programme and show professionalism and punctuality.
Applications to the Academy close on the 15th September 2011. An application form is available online at www.rayc.org.nz/youthacademy or from the Akarana office. For further information please contact academy@rayc.org.nz or phone Dorothee Lampe 09 524 9945.

NEW: Paddling Academy
Taught on surf skis by professional paddling coaches, the Paddling Academy is a safe and fun introduction to the sport of paddling for 13 to 19 year olds. Surf Skis are safe and purpose built for the ocean. They are designed to catch and ride ocean swells. The big difference between a surf ski and a kayak is that paddlers sit on a surf ski versus sitting in a kayak. If a paddler falls off their ski, it will not sink (unless there is a hole in it) and the paddler can hold on to it, and then get back on quickly. Learning to paddle on a surf ski is a skill that is transferrable to Olympic flat water sprint kayaking, white water paddling, river paddling, surf life saving surf ski racing and sea kayaking.
The paddling classes start in Term 4 from Tuesday 25 October.
Each programme is taught over eight sessions of 1.5 hours and covers the correct paddling technique, remounts and basic water safety skills, the dynamics of the ocean, wind, tides and waves. Participants will also increase their overall fitness during the programme.
Programmes Offered (session length is 1.5hrs)
  • After school, 8 session programme
  • Saturdays and Sunday , 8 session programme
  • Half day Paddle Holiday programme, Mon – Fri
  • Full day Sail-Paddle Holiday programme, Mon – Thur
We also offer one hour beginners sessions, group and individual sessions for adults and we have a double surf ski that allows us to take people out with disabilities. To find out more, contact RAYC.
