The sun shone on Chester

by CRW Official Press on 15 Aug 2011
During Chester Race Week 2011 it was busy on beautiful Mahone Bay Ryan Cameron
The final day of racing at the Chester Race Week was blessed with sunny skies, warm temperatures and fair winds. Around the Chester Yacht Club the refrain 'for yacht racing, it doesn’t get any better than this'.

Andreas Josenhans generously gave of his time and significant yacht racing experience by running seminars each morning for the racers. He provided much valuable information on how to get more out of the boats, talked about the race courses, and answered questions on the rules of yacht racing.

As the sailors came off the waters of beautiful Mahone Bay they all were very happy with the racing today and many complimented Chester Yacht Club for running a 'first class regatta'

Saturday’s conditions started with clear skies and a few little clouds to make for picture perfect conditions. The winds were light to start but filled in after slight delays to the starts. The breeze stayed consistent at eight to ten knots until about 3:30pm when it started to die. The 'Distance Class' course, for the big ocean racers, was shortened somewhat as were some of the Bravo class races. Bluenose class got in two highly competitive races.

The presentation of the awards and beautiful trophies took place on the Chester Yacht Club veranda on perfect summer’s evening. Perfect, that is, for the winners with the losers saying 'wait until next year'.

In the late afternoon the racers and visitors were treated to a 'Belly Dancing' demonstration. That’s right… belly dancers at the Chester Yacht Club veranda. The wind-up party got under way at sundown with 'The Chess Club' band belting out to the tunes until last call at 1:30 am.

And, Chester Race Week 2011 goes into the record books. Commodore Don McAlpine said 'although I didn’t do as well as I had hoped with my Bluenose 'Stinger' it was a truly great Race Week. It may be cliché but sponsors make it possible but volunteers make it happen' concluded McAlpine.

Results for Chester Race Week 2011 available at press time.
