A world first at Cowes - the Sail-in Cinema

First there were grand picture theatres, then there were drive-ins, then came the era of watch-it-at-home, and it seemed as though the days of the movie house were over. However, giant screens and 3D arrived to bring the movie industry back from the dead - but that was all long before a new world first which has just taken place - a Sail-in Cinema.

The Sponsor of Britain's celebrated Cowes Week, Aberdeen Asset Management, has come up with a world first – a sail-in cinema to keep yachties, friends, locals and visitors entertained after sailing finishes for the day.

Talisker, the single malt Scotch Whisky made by the sea, hosted the world’s first-ever Sail-In Cinema on Friday 12 August at 7.00pm.

Talisker worked with RPM and Big Screen Media to provide a giant screen (10.5m wide and 5.5m high) off Cowes Esplanade, showed a movie chosen by the public, and more than 100 yachts gathered in the Solent for for the world first.

The Oscar-winning sea epic, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, was chosen through a public vote.

Sailors were able to drop anchor and watch the movie with the soundtrack broadcast through the radios on their vessels.

The film was shown on the final day of the eight-day regatta on a 10.5m by 5.5m (34ft by 18ft) screen off Cowes Esplanade.

Commenting on the Sail-In Cinema, Juliet McInnes, Brand Manager for Talisker at Diageo, said: 'We are really excited about bringing this unique experience to the world’s best-known sailing event.'
