World Iceboat Championship

by Event Media on 5 Feb 2003
Anyone who's watched Karol Jablonski on the water and at post-race gatherings knows of his steely-eyed determination and intense concentration. The Ice Man was one nickname for him bandied about at the last Bermuda Gold Cup. This multi-talented sailor has just earned that moniker in a very real sense.. he's just won the World Iceboat Championship (sailed in the DN class) in Northern New York's Lake Champlain. Six races sailed over two days were enough for a valid championship. The DN class has a unique NOR -- the location of the event is publicized as 'North American Eastern Lakes Region.' with a hotline setup to tell competitors where and when to launch when the rather rare ideal conditions occur. The North American Eastern Lakes Region is about the size of France....

127 boats were divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets. Top five in the Gold Fleet for the Championship:

1. Karol Jablonski, POL, 11 points

2. Thomas Karlsson, SWE, 14

3. Ron Sherry, USA, 16

4. Bernd Zeiger, GER, 20

5. Tomas Lindgren, SWE, 26
