Pick the windshifts with new Polarised sunglasses

by Kookaburra Challenge on 27 Jan 2003
In a sport where reading the conditions is key, Australia's top sailors are discovering a new polarisation technology - and it's creating a strong advantage.

Yesterday's win by Chris Nicholson in the Australian 49er Championship at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club and recent wins by Iain Murray in the Pittwater to Coffs on Wild Oats and Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page in the 470 Gold for Gold Series share one common element - utilising a new polarised sunglass technology from Kaenon Polarized™ sunglasses.

After yesterday's win, Chris Nicholson said, 'In the light, shifty conditions off Geelong, the optics of Kaenon Polarized made it possible to spot most wind shifts and that was key to our win.'

So, what is polarization, and what's new about it? Polarisation is the only proven technology that effectively eliminates glare. All polarised lenses work by containing a polarised film in which molecules run in parallel, horizontal lines.

The film acts as a filter to block out glare because glare vibrates horizontally in the atmosphere. High quality polarised optics remove irritating glare, allowing eyes to relax and gain greater depth perception, enhanced contrast and reduced eyestrain.

But, not all polarised sunglasses are equal.

Kaenon Polarized™, based in Newport Beach California are the world's first sunglass with polarized lens technology to offer varying Light Transmission Levels (LTL) in specifically developed tints.

These purpose-built tints allow the wearer to customize for light and terrain conditions and personal preference.

Kaenon Polarized first proved its optical superiority and performance in the punishing conditions of the Volvo Round the World Race, with Olympic medallist, 10-time world champion and skipper of illbruck Challenge, John Kostecki sailing with Kaenon Polarized throughout the race.

On illbruck John preferred to wear the Kore with a grey lens in LTL 28™. As a true testament to the demand for varying LTLs, each team member on illbruck had a tint and LTL preference - and they were all on the same boat.

ABOUT KAENON POLARIZED

Established in 2001 by successful US athletes and leading eyewear industry executives, Kaenon Polarized created the first polarized brand to create varying Light Transmission Levels (LTL) in specifically developed tints.

By making their own polarized film, they have created a technology to allow for maximum polarizing efficiency in their Glare 86Ô polarizing element that allows for, and controls, the amount of light transmitting through the lens to the wearer's eye.

This revolutionary technology is combined with three purpose-built lens tints developed by Kaenon: Grey, Copper and Yellow. Grey is a natural tint, Copper is colour enhancing and both are available in 3 specific light transmission levels each: 12% the darkest, 28% a medium LTL and the lightest in Grey 40% and Copper 50%. Yellow is offered in one light transmission of 35%, a specific sight fishing combination of extreme lens tint and light transmission level.

Kaenon Polarized further enhances their superior optical lens technology by utilizing a new, revolutionary lens material called SR-91 to house the Glare 86 polarizing element.

Together with Glare 86, Kaenon's exclusive and newly created SR-91 lens material is the foundation for the finest performance-polarized lens in the world. Not only does the Kaenon Polarized lens pass ANSI Z.87.1 for high mass impact, but COLTS Laboratories has passed the Kaenon polarized product with an optical acuity and clarity rating of 40 in the Definition/ Resolving Power rating - the highest score that can be achieved in the Z.87.1 testing. SR-91 is neither polycarbonate, CR-39 nor glass. It is revolutionary.

Kaenon is currently sold in Australia through selected high-end sunglass and optical boutiques and in sailing, fishing, surf, lifestyle and outdoor sporting goods stores.

Kookaburra Challenge, lead by Iain Murray and Steffan Jacob, is the sole distributor of Kaenon Polarized sunglasses in Australia.
