Sam Meech wins Laser Junior World Championships Title
Sam
Meech, NZL Sailing Team Laser sailor, has taken out the 2011 Laser
Junior World Championship which concluded over the weekend in La
Rochelle, France.
“It is really cool to have won
the regatta. I went to the event aiming to win, so I am really happy to
have achieved it”, says Meech, pictured at left on the podium.
“The conditions were great for
sailing, although we could have done without the rain earlier on in the
week. We ended up getting about 10-15knots just about every day so it
was easy to get all the races completed.”
More accustomed to competing
alongside the world’s best in the Olympic class senior Laser fleet at
ISAF World Cup Sailing Regattas, Meech fits the under-21 age bracket
required to compete for this Junior World title, and he made it look
easy.
Meech explains, “The format of
four qualifying days made all the results really close. It was really
good for me as it kept the pressure on right until the last race.”
Up against 147 junior Laser
sailors from around the world, the young kiwi took a total of eight race
wins across the twelve race series, and only finished outside the top
two in one race. While the title wasn’t in the bag until the final day,
Meech finished the regatta nine points clear of the silver medallist,
Alex Mills-Barton from Great Britain.
Martin Evans, also from Great Britain, claimed the bronze.
Meech, who represents the
Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club is the youngest of five Laser sailors
in Yachting New Zealand’s NZL Sailing Team. In 2009 he won gold for New
Zealand at the prestigious ISAF Youth World Championships and was named
joint winner of the 2009 New Zealand Young Sailor of the Year.
Meech adds this junior world
title to his previous best result in 2011 which was an impressive fourth
place at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta in Palma de Mallorca,
Spain.
He explains what’s on next:- “I
am now going to sail in Weymouth for a week and then I am back in New
Zealand until the ISAF Worlds in Perth.”
Two more kiwis were in La
Rochelle for the event including Spencer Loxton, who placed 30th overall
and Michael Cate, who finished in 56th.
One week til Weymouth
The NZL Sailing Team to represent New Zealand at the 2011 Olympic Test Event –
officially the Weymouth and Portland 2011 International Regatta - is
descending upon Weymouth, England in preparation for the start of racing
next week.
Left: 470 sailors Paul and
Jason, their coach Hamish Willcox pictured with Jez Fanstone and Scott
Creswell depart from Auckland Airport last Sunday bound for Weymouth.
The RS:X women’s and men’s
fleets, including Jon-Paul Tobin and Natalia Kosinska for New Zealand,
are the first to start racing on August 4th with competition dates
staggered for each of the classes following that. Read the ISAF preview of RS:X racing here.
Sara Winther and Andrew Murdoch
kick off in the single-handed dinghy events the following day (August
5th) as does Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie and Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason
Saunders in the women’s and men’s double-handed 470. Read the ISAF preview of the Laser and Laser Radial fleets here.
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke
hit the water in the 49er skiff on August 6th, along with Dan Slater in
the Finn event and Star sailors Hamish Pepper and Craig Monk.
In each class five days are
scheduled for qualifying races, with a reserve day for catch-up racing
if required, and then a final medal race day when the medals will be
decided. The format mimics that which sailors will face at the 2012
Olympic Games.

About the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships
All ten Olympic Class World
titles for 2011 will be decided at the enormous ISAF Sailing World
Championships which will attract around 1400 sailors to Fremantle,
Western Australia.
The 2011 ISAF Sailing World
Championships is the key qualification event for the London 2012 Olympic
Games. Seventy five per cent of nations to participate in London will
be decided at Perth 2011.
Sara Winther update
Laser Radial sailor, Sara Winther left New Zealand last Friday for Weymouth; she sent this update just prior to leaving…
This event aims to mimic the
actual Olympics, with only one entry per class from each country and the
regatta being sailed in the same waters and same format as the
Olympics. This is a massive opportunity for me to practice being in this
environment and know how the real thing might feel next year.
Over the last five weeks I have
managed to get quite a bit of yachting in despite some very average
weather at times, and also managed plenty of time on the bike and in the
gym. Marko (Mark Orams) and I have also had a good chance to keep
developing our relationship and how we will operate while overseas.
A couple of weeks ago the NZL
Sailing Team came together for a test event briefing and media session.
While at Voyager Maritime Maritime Museum in Auckland the media were
invited to see Jez Fanstone present us with our race bibs for the event.
Can’t wait to wear it for race one!
100 day mark for Volvo Ocean Race start
July 21st marked 100 days to go until the start of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.
This race will see a New Zealand flagged entry – CAMPER, Emirates Team
New Zealand – take part for the first time in 17 years.Opening with an
In-port race in Alicante, Spain on October 29th with the fleet embarks
on the 39,000 nautical mile race on Saturday 5th November.
Here’s an update from CAMPER...
CAMPER heading to Europe: CAMPER
with Emirates Team New Zealand just left their Auckland base. Chris
Nicholson and his sailors loaded their Volvo Open 70 to a Maersk Line
container ship on Tuesday after a three-month testing period in
Auckland. The team will now have a couple of weeks off before reuniting
with CAMPER in the United Kingdom.
CAMPER skipper Chris Nicholson:
“We have covered more than 8,000 miles of sail testing from the tip of
the tropics to the edge of the Southern ocean. Now is a good time for
some rest and relaxation for everyone.
“I am also really pleased to
have seen the whole team gel. Many people say this, but it is clear that
underneath all that is happening here, we have a group of people who
are friends. After spending day after day with each other, working long
hours and under pressure for deadlines, we all still want to go for a
beer, and that’s a good sign for the next nine months.”
About the Volvo Ocean Race
• The next Volvo Ocean
Race will start in the Spanish port of Alicante in the autumn of 2011
and finish in Galway, Ireland during the summer of 2012.
• The course will include
stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China),
Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal)
and Lorient (France).
• The first 31,250 nautical-mile
race first took place over 37 years ago (as the Whitbread Round the
World Race 1973-74), testing the crews against some of the most
ferocious elements that man can encounter.
• The 2011-12 race will be the 11th edition of the event.
• The design of the boat is regulated and the boat is built for speed.
Auckland Viaduct spruce up before VOR Stopover
The
organisers of the Auckland Stopover for the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race
have revealed plans for the Race Village and bid bon voyage to CAMPER,
the Emirates Team New Zealand entry for the event.
“We have had an extensive three
month testing period here in Auckland, which has provided a unique
location for us to sail CAMPER in a variety of true race conditions,”
says CAMPER skipper Chris Nicholson. “The city has so much history with
the race and it will be a proud moment for our team to sail into
Auckland next March.”
The Auckland Stopover runs from 8
to 18 March. Like all nine stopovers in the race, it will feature an
In-Port Race, with points counting towards the Volvo Ocean Race overall
standings, and a Pro-Am Race.
8 March: boats scheduled to arrive for finish of Leg 4 from Sanya (China)
16 March: Pro-Am Race
17 March: In-Port Race
18 March: Start of Leg 5 to Itajai (Brazil)
“Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour will
be transformed into a vibrant Race Village for the Stopover with the
new Viaduct Events Centre acting as Race HQ,” says Auckland Stopover
Port Director Tom Mayo. “It will be an amazing venue and entry into the
Race Village will be free throughout the Stopover.”
Latitude Island will be the
entertainment hub with a packed programme of events on the big stage,
large screens, live music plus concept bars. And there’ll be a top
quality range of stalls, public eateries and family activities in
Gateway Plaza.
Visitors to Pit Lane, in front
of the Viaduct Events Centre, can see the Volvo Open 70 fleet up close
and watch the teams prepare for the next leg. The interactive Volvo
Ocean Race Experience Zone offers unique insight into life onboard
during the Race with the adrenaline-filled simulator, the Grinding
Challenge and a chance to race mini Volvo Open 70s. View the 3D flyover of the Race Village here.

Full Metal Jacket Racing
Harry
and Will of Full Metal Jacket Racing, sailing with two locals from
Vladivostok, won the ISAF Grade 2 Seven Feet Cup defeating fellow kiwi
Laurie Jury 3-0 in the final.
The event was held out of the
Seven Feet Yacht Club in Vladivostok Russia, an interesting area of the
world and a place of much development. Sailing in Platu 25s we were
confident of a top performance with lots of Platu racing under our belt
back in New Zealand and after overcoming the language barrier with our
crew mates the team put in a dominating performance winning a total of
18 races only dropping one.
Our next regatta is
'International Match Race France', an ISAF Grade 1 regatta held out of
Pornichet starting on the 28th of August. For this event we have Garth
Ellingham from Waka Racing joining the team as our bowman, Shaun Mason
has flown home to compete in Hamilton Island Race Week on Georgia and
Brad Farrand will now switch to bow duties.
This is going to be a great
regatta and the team is really looking forward to racing at the higher
level of competition. Will keep you posted with twitter and report
updates.

Four top ten for kiwi Youth sailors as World Championship concludes
The
41st Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2011 has wrapped up in
Zadar, Croatia for the twelve sailors in the 2011 NZL Yachting Trust
Youth Team.

While the team missed out on the
medals this year, four representatives finished top ten, and New
Zealand was within the top third of finishers in six of the eight
classes sailed in Zadar.
“It was a very challenging and
competitive regatta,” reports Ian Neely, Team Manager from Zadar.
“Conditions were predominantly light, soft winds. On the whole I think
we struggled with the super tight racing in the very light winds for the
first two thirds of the regatta. And I think all the tem learnt a lot
about these sorts of conditions and how to race in them.”
“There are a good number of
young sailors in the team and they are looking forward to moving ahead
to another youth campaign next season when this regatta will be held in
Ireland, and the older sailors are moving on to Olympic campaigns.”
In the SL16 multihull Tomer
Simhony and Ellie Copeland topped the team’s results and finished in
fifth place after a ninth place in the one race sailed on the final day.

OptiWorlds Update: Lion Foundation to leave a legacy
A
cold, blustery, winter Friday in a factory in Kumeu seems far removed
from the excitement of the world’s biggest one design sailing regatta
coming to Napier this summer.
This was the scene though when Lion Foundation representatives and the 2011 OptiWorlds
organising committee recently visited inflatable boat makers Southern
Pacific to do a progress check on 25 centre console, coaching RIBs
currently under construction and to be used in Napier. They include
seven 4.3 metre 30hp models and eighteen 4.7 metre 40hp models.
Grants and Marketing General
Manager, Jonny Gritt, from Lion Foundation said funding had two
benefits: - “Firstly the OptiWorlds will be a wonderful event for New
Zealand. There will be over 200 sailors aged 11-15 from around the
world. During the regatta each RIB will have two international coaches
aboard from different countries.”
“Secondly when the OptiWorlds
finish Lion Foundation will leave a legacy to New Zealand Boating Clubs.
All the RIBs will end up in boating or yacht clubs as coach/support
boats from Kerikeri in the Far North to Owaka in the far South. These
clubs will get these RIBs at a substantially discounted rate.”
Southern Pacific has used as
many New Zealand made components as possible. The trailers are made by
Enduro in Hamilton and have clever flushable chassis; and the alloy
hulls are subcontracted and made locally.
Southern Pacific then make the
fully welded inflatable tubes and mount them onto the hulls taking about
60 hours. Each boat has an anchor well with 40 metres of warp, five
metres of chain and a danforth anchor, bow roller, transom mounted flag
holders and towing bridle mount.
Once the bare hulls are made
they are wrapped in plastic and sent to Ericksen Honda in Napier for the
final fit-out of centre consoles, gauges, radios and 30hp or 40hp
motors. Ericksens will be doing all the servicing in Napier throughout
the OptiWorlds while Southern Pacific will provide a comprehensive tube
repair pack and a spare boat for the regatta.
The regatta organising committee
were impressed with the standard of boat fit-out and are delighted that
the OptiWorldsNZ 2011 logo on the side will last for years to come as
reminder to future sailors of this event, while Southern Pacific Manager
Jonathan Gravit is excited about the helicopter photo shoot of 25 of
his boats in formation this summer.
Opti Sailors prepare
Three
of the five-member 2011 New Zealand Optimist Team who will go up
against the rest of the world in Napier at the end of the calendar year
are on an international tour of duty doing time in Optimist Regattas
around the globe in preparation.
The 2011 New Zealand Optimist
team includes Leonard Takahashi-Fry, Isaac Mchardie, Markus Somerville,
William Mckenzie and Nathaniel Deverell.
Leonard, Isaac and Markus taking
with them former Optimist World Champion, Chris Steele as coach are on a
training tour which takes in the Dominican Republic, Singapore, the
USA, England and Wales.

New man at the helm of the Bay of Islands Yacht Club
At their AGM on 10th July, the Bay of Islands Yacht Club in Waitangi elected Andy Greager as their new Commodore.
The Club has shown tremendous
growth since Andy and the new Vice Commodore John Candy got involved
several years ago. Key to the recent success of the Club has been an
active sail training and racing programme, and in the last two years an
immense fund raising effort and related social activity spearheaded by
Margot and John Roberts.
The financial back bone remains
the volunteer-operated slipway, as well as the moorings in the Waitangi
river. Andy has outlined that he will continue to foster the growth of
the Club by reconciling the current efforts and focussing on a
membership drive for this current year.
Visitors, members and new
members are all welcome to enjoy either boating, or just socialising, in
a stunning setting right by the ocean. Recent activities by the Club
include the Winter Series as well as the Midwinter Medieval Dinner. You can read the Club news here.
For the next season, a busy
racing programme has been scheduled, with the traditional Labour Weekend
Senior Centreboard Regatta tying in with the Coastal Classic on 21-24
October, the Festival of Fifteens on 19-20 November, and culminating in
the Europe Dinghy Global Veteran Cup 8-12 January 2012.
This season, the Club is also
celebrating the 45th edition of the traditional Whangaroa coastal race
and cruise on 28th January.
In addition, all Youth classes
are invited to the Northland Youth Championship that will be hosted in
Waitangi 24-25 March 2012. This regatta will also be part of the
Starling Travellers Series. The preliminary sailing calendar can be viewed on the Club website.

Townson 32 Class Championships and Townson Owners Regatta
Tony Kendall reports from the Townson 32 Class…
Tony Evans and helmsman Kevin
Marsh off Grenada scooped the pool this year after a two year absence
from winning the Class Championships.
Pictured: Murray Deeble, Crimson Dynamo, May Merit trophy winner with Tony Kendall
Generous support from Altex
Yacht and Boat Paints with product and Burnsco Marine and Leisure with
vouchers, together with numerous other additions to the Townson 32 Class
Championship trophy locker ensured that both were needed to carry off
the memorabilia. These included the 31 year old Hauraki Marine Class
Champion Trophy, the 25 year old Townson 32 Line honours trophy and the
mounted personalised number plate “T32 1” together with Altex product
and Burnsco vouchers.
Rob Ellis with Takahoa has been a
steadily improving T32 over the years in the Class Championships and
this year was rewarded with the 31 year old Hauraki Marine Handicap
Trophy.
In the Townson Owners regatta,
the Andresen family sailed Moonsong, their Townson 9 metre hard chine to
win the under 10metre division. Altex Yacht and Boat Paint have
presented an inaugural gold cup for the under 10m division to be won for
the first time by Moonsong.
The Over 10m division saw a good
contest with Bill Paul, Bravura, a Townson 10m winning the inaugural
Altex Over 10metre Gold Cup on handicap.
The May Merit Trophy, a
beautifully encased full model of a Townson 32 hull was awarded this
year to Murray Deeble, Crimson Dynamo, a Townson 25 for his enthusiasm
in his effort to participate in the Regatta. They had to leave Milford
Creek at 6.30am in the dark at high tide, in the rain and into a
Northerly wind and seas. They had to wait 3 hours under Rangitoto Light
to race. After 2 races in tough conditions, they had to return at 5.30pm
to get into the Creek again. At least the weather and wind had
improved! We are in awe of Murray and his crew coping with this weather
to race.
