STS Young Endeavour - Open Day in Sydney

by Kestin Farr/Sail-World Cruising on 22 Jul 2011
STS Young Endeavour - STS YOUNG ENDEAVOUR - Free Public Open Day Kestin Farr

Australia's sail training ship, the STS Young Endeavour, is having an open day in her home port of Sydney. It's a great opportunity to see the ship on Saturday 30 July, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, at Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo, Sydney.

A voyage in Young Endeavour sees youth crew take part in all aspects of sailing a square-rigged vessel. During each voyage youth crew spend approximately five nights under sail at sea and five nights at anchor, cover an average of 400nm and actively participate in approximately 80 hours of ships watches.

They participate in routine rounds, helm and navigation, as well as sail handling, working aloft and assisting the chef. Each voyage brings together youth from diverse backgrounds, develops teamwork and leadership skills, increases self awareness and creates a strong sense of community responsibility.

Voyages onboard STS Young Endeavour are open to all Australians aged 16-23.

Applications for voyages in 2012 will open soon. Visit www.youngendeavour.gov.au for more information, but in the meantime, if you are anywhere within reach of Sydney, put 30th July in your diary, and be there!

For those in other parts of Australia, there are upcoming Open Days in Eden, Melbourne and Hobart.
