Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 30 June 2011
Our coverage of the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, from the weekend concludes in this edition.
We have a story from on board one of the top yachts, from a New Zealander of our close acquaintance, plus several galleries of images from the race which attracted almost 2000 competitors.
One of the features of the ISAF's Olympic Commission report was that while sailing struggled to get off the bottom rung of the television ladder, in terms of internet coverage it was much closer to the top - and that included only coverage on the ISAF site, which was not all it could have been in Qingdao.
For the Round the Island Race the statistics are impressive and we quote:
On Race Day, the total number of page impressions on the Race website amounted to 393,000 which is 100,000 up on 2010’s site visitors. The Race Viewer, allowing online spectators to track boats of their choice, was downloaded by over 32,000 people. The interactive Race Progress Blog produced by the Media Centre and Race Control attracted 17,762 visitors over the course of twelve hours with appreciative comments coming in from as far away as Australia, the Philippines, Mexico and the US.
The global coverage was more extensive than the site lets on - however their point remains.
On Sail-World the story and images were the top rating for three days - across all regions - which is very good for what is essentially a race around an island off the coast of England, which takes about six hours for the leaders to complete.
The point is that properly covered events can generate significant internet coverage and fan following - even though the print and other media are not interested, outside of the immediate geographic area of reader interest.
Predictwind have announced yet another enhancement to their already excellent offering. Read the story in this edition, and http://www.sail-world.com/NZ/From-Predictwind,-an-upgraded-weather-model/85266!follow_the_links to see the details of the new features and enhancements.
Not surprisingly, Doyle Sails will be supplying the sails for the Chinese backed entry in the Volvo Ocean Race. In this edition http://www.sail-world.com/NZ/Volvo-Ocean-Race:-Team-Sanya-specifies-Stratis-Sails-from-Doyle/85272!Doyles_explain_the_expertise they will bring to the campaign, and certainly Team Sanya is an entry that will be watched with a great deal of interest.
Many thanks to those who have contributed to this edition, particularly those using our online submission and image loading facility which can be accessed by http://www.sail-world.com/admin/add_story.cfm!clicking_here
