Volvo Ocean Race

by Lizzie Green, on 26 Oct 2000
Waterford Crystal appointed Official Trophy Supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race
World-renowned Crystal brand, Waterford Crystal were today officially appointed to
supply the entire trophy requirements of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The race trophy is presently being designed and will be a fitting icon of the Volvo Ocean
Race. It will be sculpturally based on the fighting finish between two yachts in full sail
and will showcase all of the skills of crystal craftsmanship. The Volvo Ocean Race
trophy will be formally launched at the London Boat Show in January 2001.

In addition to the Volvo Ocean Race trophy itself, leg trophies will be created for each
stage of the race, to be presented at each port on arrival. Each and every crewmember
who sails in the Volvo Ocean Race will also receive a unique, engraved Waterford Crystal
presentation piece. This will provide each participant with a lasting memory of the race.

Waterford Crystal is the worlds most important crystal brand and has provided trophies
for many prestigious events including the Volvo Masters at Montiecastillo (Golf), all nine
Tennis Masters Series on the ATP Tour plus the Tennis Masters Cup, and both the
French and Germany Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Commenting on the appointment, Chief Executive of the Volvo Ocean Race, Helge Alten
said: "The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's premier ocean race, and it is appropriate that
the trophy for such an event should be designed and manufactured by a world class
organisation. Waterford Crystal is, therefore, an obvious choice for us and we are looking
forward to seeing the Volvo Ocean Race trophy when it is unveiled for the first time at the
London International Boat Show in January 2001."

Mr Mel Morgan, Commercial Manager, World Sports at Waterford Crystal said: "This is
indeed a truly global event and it is an honour to be partnered with Volvo in crafting the
symbols of achievement for this great race. We look forward to continuing our valued
relationship with Volvo throughout the preparation for, and the duration of, the Volvo
Ocean Race."

Fortune favours the Beneteaus!
Thank you, Huey… Some sun, and a tad of wind means it is time to go racing... Ahead of the annual Beneteau Pittwater Regatta by Flagstaff Marine the weather had not been all that grand. So, peaks of sun migrating to distinct patches, and the occasional zephyr turning into a waft, then on to a calm breeze was fortunate.
