Contessa 32 Class Association 40 Years on

by Keith Feltham on 1 Jun 2011
AIR CAROLINA Keith Feltham
The Contessa 32 Class Association is currently celebrating the 40th year of production of this 'Classic Cruiser Racer' and three boats are due to start the 2500 mile Azores and back race this Saturday 4th June.

One of the starters is Richard Clark, the Contessa 32 Class Captain with his co-skipper David Feltham.

They are racing a boat called 'Carolina'. Carolina was originally registered in 1973 to Winston Churchill MP. She is an old lady but much updated and regularly races in the Contessa 32 Class Association Solent Series.

The AZAB course covers just less than 2,500 miles of ocean, approximately 1220 miles on each leg. The majority of yachts usually take between 7 and 10 days to reach the Azores allowing a week or so to relax and restock for the return passage.

Preparations are picking up a gear as they near the start of Great Britain's biggest Ocean Yacht Race of the year. The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in partnership with the Clube Naval, Ponta Delgada, are delighted to host this four-yearly race.
