Nova Scotia sailors Matt Stokes and Mike Evans are in Pohang, Korea as Canadian representatives in the upcoming Korea Cup Yacht Race. They arrived safely in Seoul a few days ago and met with their Korean host, Andrew Cho, and their American colleagues Ike Babbitt and Alex Sachs. Andrew Cho is the owner of a sports marketing business based in New York City and was contracted by the Korean Sailing Federation to help with this event. Besides being extremely helpful, Andrew is an avid sports enthusiast who knows all the great sports stars and has great stories to share.
After a short flight to Pohang on Saturday, they have spent the last two days visiting the city, enjoying the local food and meeting with race organizers.
A ceremony took place at the race headquarters with speeches from the Mayor of Pohang and a number of other local politicians. Everyone is excited about the event as the city plays host to sailors from so many countries. Tomorrow they meet the team of Koreans they will be sailing with and will hopefully get out for a practice sail. Matt and Mike will be sailing on a Taylor 47, while the Americans are on a Sydney 40. Both yachts sharing similar speed should create a friendly rivalry between the teams. There are also a number of Russian boats involved in the event and the word is that they are very competitive and competent mariners. Matt and Matt will certainly be looking forward to lining up against the Russians and determine who's best this time!
Matt and Mike have promised video and photos of the racing; stay tuned for more reports!
