Action was full on in the weekend at the EUROSAF Match Racing, Women’s European Championships 2011 Qualification event in Helsinki, Finland.

Held by the HSS Match Race Center in the fleet of Elliott 6m yachts the sailors and wild weather provided a spectacle for all. Winds of up to 32 knots delayed sailing for a morning. Katie Spithill’s Australian Team took first place in the event by winning all the matches Team China with Wang Ru at the helm impressed with their performance in the really strong winds and won all their previous races.

On the final day they easily secured their place in the European Championship. Third qualification slot went to Rita Goncalves Portugal team. The team had not won a race before today but recorded 8 points in 9 matches in the lighter winds. They beat fourth placed Stephanie Hazard from New Zealand on a tie breaker. Local favorites Team Silja Lehtinen sailed only two matches due to a flu. Team Skudina from Russia with replacement helm Irina Lotsmanova were forced out by injury before Sunday’s racing.
