Hot Vindaloo wins division in Bay to Bay 2011

Congratulations to owner Julian Griffiths and his team on 'Hot Vindaloo' – a Pescott Firefly 8.5 Grand Prix catamaran – who claimed top division honors in the 31st Bay to Bay Race 2011 in Queensland, Australia. 'Hot Vindaloo' corrected to win overall in the Sports Multihull OMR division in the 87nm race from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay. 'Hot Vindaloo' competed with a new Ullman GP Race Technora mainsail and Red Line AP Asymmetrical Spinnaker.

Griffiths, a boat builder based north of Brisbane, did a complete refurbishment of 'Hot Vindaloo' a few years ago. For the Bay to Bay 2011, Griffiths' crew included Trent Gorden, a local accomplished junior dinghy sailor, and brothers Bucky and Yancy Smith of Ullman Sails Sunshine Coast. Bucky is a past Etchells World Champion and head of sales and customer service at the Ullman loft in Moffat Beach. Yancy has raced multihulls extensively and is head designer and sailmaker at the loft. Both played integral in the design and build of the 'Hot Vindaloo' sails.

The Bay to Bay Race is hosted by Hervey Bay Sailing Club and takes place over two days with a stopover at Fraser Island Saturday night. The race starts in Tin Can Bay with an overnight stop at Gary’s anchorage and then continues on to Hervey Bay on the Sunday. In its 31st year, the race typically has an average of 180 trailer yachts competing.
