It was a long day on the water at the Team Sailing Nationals at Algies Bay, with fresh breezes allowing good progress through the second round robin, but causing collisions with damage to boats, and an unusual number of sailors taken ashore with minor injuries.
With Round Robin Two almost completed, Auckland Regions Champions St Kentigern College and Kerikeri High School (Northland winners) lead the Gold fleet with six wins each, closely followed by Lindisfarne College (Lower North Islands winners) and Whangarei Boys on five wins. Marlborough Boys College is the top placed South Island School. Napier Girls and New Plymouth Girls are also in the Gold fleet, tied on two wins each. The other teams in the girls final will be Westlake Girls and Nelson Girls, both currently sailing in the silver fleet. St Cuthbert’s College are leading the Bronze Fleet on seven wins.
There has been close tactical racing in all three fleets, keeping the umpire team very busy. Team Sailing requires a large number of officials and helpers, and Sandspit Yacht Club and the New Zealand Team Sailing Association would like to acknowledge the assistance of all the parents, teachers and enthusiasts for youth sailing who have turned out to help.
