Craig Escott is ahead in the Access 2 3 fleet 0481 - Australian and Asia-Pacific Access Class Championships 2011 Access Dinghies
Australian and Asia-Pacific Access Championships - Just a few points separate the top places in all divisions of the Australian and Asia-Pacific Access Class Championships 2011 being held at Royal Perth Yacht Club today.
Three or four heats were sailed in each of the five divisions today, with the two person fleet racing in the morning and the single person fleet in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh north westerly breezes, again shifty and variable in strength, provided excellent racing all day. With all divisions having six or seven races completed, sailors can drop their worst result.
With three wins this afternoon, Craig Escott (TAS) has taken the lead on a tie-break from Martin Waller (VIC) in the Access 2.3 division. It is likely the final races tomorrow will decide the championship between these two competitors. Third placed Michiyo Nishino (JPN) is six points behind.
Robert Eadie (TAS) maintains a slender one point margin over Roy Jewell (VIC) in the Access 303 single person results. WA sailors Wayne McNeil and Mark Bagby are not far behind having dropped their DSQ from yesterday.
In the two person 303 fleet, Wayne Crabb and Bob Schahinger (SA) have taken the lead from Wayne McNeil and Neil Colwell (WA) who maintain a single point lead over and Lachlan and Tony Clear (NSW). Crabb and Schahinger look to have a small break tonight, but things could look different after tomorrow’s racing.
In the Liberty division, yesterday’s leader Barry Coates (QLD) has slipped down the placings. The fleet is now lead by Chris Riordan (SA) with Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Mike Cull (WA) second and Bob Schahinger (SA) third. Two points separate the top three, so it is anybody’s regatta.
SKUD 18 sailors Jamie Dunross and Rachael Cox (WA) are tied on points with Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim (SIN) but the tie-break falls in favour of the Singaporeans. Russell Phillips and Morgan Staley (VIC) have the lead at times but cannot match the outright speed of the WA and Singapore teams. Dunross and Cox launched their new SKUD on the first day of the regatta and have impressed by how quickly they have found the boat speed.
Racing concludes tomorrow on Matilda Bay with two races planned for each of the divisions.
