Carnage at B14 Worlds
by Di Pearson on 7 Jan 2003
After lack-lustre shifty breezes brought the B14’s ashore today, to await breeze for the third race of the Sail Melbourne B14 World Championship at McCrae Y.C., the wind hit with a vengeance this afternoon causing carnage on the course.
Of the 30 starters, 10 returned to shore injured – some in tow, others capsizing, not able to handle the 23 knots of wind that came in from the south with a vengeance this afternoon.
Jono Pank/Shaun Barber (GBR) Snatch, showed what they were made of in the blustery conditions, handling the conditions like true professionals to come home for their first win of the series.
Victoria’s Bangers and Rhys Bancroft Bugger the Bone, had a long swim leaving them in 7th place, but a cool head, patience and perseverance took him back to the front end of the fleet.
Everyone on the course held their breath as series favourites, Tim Fells/Dave Cunningham (GBR) AT&T, also capsized, but recovered to be in 2nd place.
As Fells and Bancroft came to the finish line, with Fells slightly ahead, Bancroft, again using his head, luffed up to touch Fells out for 2nd place. Spectators sat opened mouthed as they watched Bancroft hit the finish line – a remarkable effort by the affable Victorian.
Amongst the other finishers was the female team of Abby Parkes/Sophie Hunt (AUS) Hunt Leather, and Richie Reynolds/Lissa McMillan (AUS) The Nude.
At 6.00pm, Race Officials were currently deciding whether to hold a further race or delay until tomorrow.
At the time of writing, full results were not available, but will be posted to the official website as they become available.
Progressively, Bancroft leads with 4 points, Fells/Cunningham 2nd with 11 points and Pank/Barber 3rd with 12 points.
