After the earthquake- Christchurch Yacht Club reports

by Nick Richardson on 2 Mar 2011

http://www.cyc.net.nz/!Christchurch_Yacht_Club looks like it will be technically closed for the season.

This season has been eventful in that we opened the season without sailing because of contamination from the September quake. A fortnight ago we had a sewage line break. But we have tried to keep sailing.

Tuesday's quake has left our storage shed on the brink of falling into the sea. So we have evacuated the yachts. Rescue boats been removed from our very badly damaged clubhouse.

Christchurch Yacht Club has been busy removing all its yachts and rescue craft from the club storage.

The club buildings have been further damaged from the September quake.

The Rowing Shed is also on an odd angle.

Raw sewage is now being pumped into the rivers meaning that all racing in the Estuary is unsafe.

The Christchurch Yacht Club has tried to maintain regular sailing this season, but last weeks quake has probably prematurely finished our season.

Major land marks such has Shag Rock have gone.

Roads to Sumner Redcliffs are now difficult to access.

The New Zealand Government has established an official disaster fund for assistance of the people of Christchurch. The death toll is expected to be approximately 200 people from 20 countries. Rectification of the damage is expected to be NZD20 billion (USD15billion) - which covers only property damage and not the personal financial damage and loss of income and restart costs - which the Appeal fund will cover.

While the time will come to help get yacht clubs and sailing back on its feet, that time is not now, and the best thing that we can to is give money to the official fund which may be accessed by http://www.christchurchearthquakeappeal.govt.nz/!clicking_here or click on the banner below If you want to link to this article then please use this URL: www.sail-world.com/80904
