Product of the Week- Hailer/Horn Speaker for VHF radios

by Martin Flory/Sail-World Cruising on 27 Feb 2011
Hailer Horn Speaker SW
Do you sometimes have trouble picking up what the VHF says? - not because of clarity but because of volume?

Dependent on your set location and how much wind, engine, ocean or sails noise there is, you could be in a far away section of the boat and miss a Securite announcement - or you could miss a weather report.

The solution is in this week's Product of the Week.

The ability to hear VHF transmissions and other communication is vital to any boat owner, especially in poor weather or emergencies. So if you have ever had those issues, you could be interested in our product of the week, the new PA/Hailer Horn Speaker.

With up to 40 watts of power handling capacity, Shakespeare's new HS-40 PA/Hailer Horn Speaker has many uses to help ensure messages are heard.

This powerful speaker is an ideal accessory for loudhailers and marine VHF radios that have built-in PA or loudhailer functions. As an external speaker for VHF radios, it provides extra volume that is especially helpful in noisy environments.

When used with true loudhailers, it fully supports the hail, fog horn, and 'listen back' functions. In 'listen back' mode, it helps amplify person-to-person communication when a radio is not being used, particularly useful in emergency situations.

The HS-40 also claims to be quite versatile. It comes with a tilt mount bracket for deck or bulkhead mounting, and also supports flush mounting.

Constructed with high-impact white plastic, this 8-ohm model has a frequency response of 250 Hz to 8 KHz and can operate in temperatures of -40 to 80° C.

Dimensions are 17.78cm W x 33.02cm D.
