Briefings – 23 February 2011

In this issue:

YNZ News

Shock of Lyttelton Quake

The enormity and scale of yesterday’s earthquake centred in Lyttelton has left the country in shock, and our love and thoughts go out to the people of Christchurch and in particular our friends and family in the yachting and boating community.

We sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are safe and well.

This newsletter contains news and upcoming events for the Canterbury region and the Editor has chosen to leave these in rather than omit them today, although clearly whether the up-coming events proceed is uncertain for now.

At this early stage the focus is still most importantly on rescue and recovery of human life. We will bring you news of the Yacht Clubs around Christchurch in future issues as this becomes known to us.

Dates for your diary
Due to the Rugby World Cup (which does not finish until 23rd October) and the Perth ISAF Worlds in early December, it has been decided to change a number of important dates as follows;

The Commodores Conference will be postponed until 2012.
The 2011 Excellence Awards will be earlier this year on Friday 28th October.

The 57th Annual General Meeting will now take place on Saturday 29th October.

Further information will be available on the www.yachtingnz.org.nz and in Briefings in the lead up to these events.

The Appointments panel is looking for applicants with skills and experience in commerce, finance and marketing, and ideally knowledge of, and experience in sport, but not necessarily Yachting.

Applicants will also need to have effective decision-making skills, well developed relationship management skills, sound judgement and a passion to contribute to the success of Yachting New Zealand.

YNZ Submissions on Aquaculture published

In Briefings newsletter around Christmas time we drew your attention to the matter of Aquaculture Legislation Amendment Bill (No 3) in front of parliament at the time, with public submissions due earlier this month.

Yachting New Zealand’s concern is to protect New Zealand’s Coastal areas from being overrun by aquaculture which could potentially inhibit access to cruising and recreational waters enjoyed by generations of kiwi boaties and yachties.

Therefore we made a formal submission to the Select Committee and this submission is now available for interested members to download and read from our website. See the YNZ Submissions webpage for this and other submissions made by Yachting New Zealand acting in the best interests of yacht and boat owners.

A second submission made by Yachting New Zealand during the last two weeks – to the Aquaculture Ministerial Advisory Panel on a proposed aquaculture zone off the Coromandel Peninsula- is also available to view on the Submissions webpage.

High Performance & International

RS:X and Bic Techno Nationals 2011
The RS:X and Techno National Championships wrapped up on Sunday after four days of light winds at the regatta hosted by Manly Sailing Club.

Racing was possible on Thursday, Friday and Sunday however with light breeze throughout the entire event the board sailors had to work hard for their placings.

Visiting international Dorian van Rijsselberghe of the Netherlands came out on top of local NZL Sailing Team sailors Jon-Paul Tobin and Tom Ashley who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, however Tobin takes the 2011 RS:X Open National Champion title in which only New Zealand entries are counted.

Kate Ellingham, from the NZL Sailing Team claims the domestic double crown winning Sail Auckland earlier this month and following that up with victory at Manly in the RS:X 8.5 fleet. Two French nationals topped the Bic Techno board with Luke Holiday from Manly Sailing Club the best of the kiwis.

60 board sailors took part in the light airs event off Manly including 21 visiting international sailors.

“The first two races were sailed in an average of 8 knots,” explains Janet Watkins, “the third race looked hopeful with a bit of planing before the start and for about half the race.  We set a slalom finish for races two and three. On Friday we managed two races again in barely 8 knots average - they certainly worked hard for their places!”

“On Saturday we had our mark one boat sitting on the horizon all day waiting for a little more that 3.5 knots from any direction! We eventually called him ashore and hoisted "A" at 1700 hrs,” says Janet.

“Sunday, the final day, didn't look too hopeful but by 1200 we had a steady but light nor'easter (Nothing above 8 again!) So we managed to complete two more pumping races for the RS:X fleets. The Technos who started the day with not having a series complete, also managed to complete three races inshore where the convection currents off the land gave them a breeze of up to 12 knots at times.”

2011 RS:X National Champion, Jon-Paul Tobin
Jon-Paul Tobin answers a couple of questions on the weekend’s Nationals regatta and what’s on next for him...

> How did the Nationals go for you?
JP: Good, we are pretty early in our training cycle but with a solid base in place both Dorian (my training team) and I were in decent shape sharing the bullets across the regatta.

> Sounds like conditions were light, all that pumping must be hard work? How are you feeling now?
JP: Great, it would have been nice to get some breeze but from a training point it was solid to get some long races in light winds.

> What's on next for you?
JP: On the water specific training commenced a few weeks ago targeted towards Sail for Gold (Weymouth, GBR) in June, heading to Europe late March for the Princess Sophia Trophy (Palma, ESP) in April...also on the schedule are a bunch of races on the Bike and SUP (Stand Up Paddle).
Overnight news from ETNZ in Oman
Emirates Team New Zealand’s Extreme 40 crew woke in Oman to news of the Christchurch earthquake.

Skipper Dean Barker said: “We couldn’t believe it. We sat stunned all morning glued to the television news. We felt very isolated, so far from home. It was very difficult to get our minds on preparations for the day.”

The team’s performance on the water on Day 3 of the Extreme series Muscat regatta was an improvement on the previous two days, scoring their first win in the Extreme series and recording results of fifth, seventh, third and seventh in the four other races sailed.

Even in the race when the team was penalised at the start and had to do a penalty turn, Barker found some big positives: “We were last and managed to work our way up through the fleet to finish seventh.”

To put that in perspective, today’s races were in the harbour “stadium”. No leg was longer than about .4 of a nautical mile. Races of three legs were completed in about 10 minutes.

“To be able to climb back through the fleet from a disastrous start was great,” Barker said. “We continue to improve - and that’s why we’re here.”

At the end of the day a series of match races were held. Emirates Team New Zealand won its race, earning one bonus point.

The team returned to the dock heartened by improved performance on the water but still numbed by events in Christchurch.

Santander To Host 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships
ISAF has announced Santander, Spain, as the host venue for the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The ISAF Sailing World Championships combines the World Championships of all the events included in the Olympic Sailing Competition and the 2014 edition is provisionally scheduled for September 2014. This year Perth, Western Australia will play host to the event in December.

Bringing together past and future Champions from all classes the Championships are one of the great events in the world sailing calendar and a key event for sailors, national teams, and sailing fans around the world.

Santander is a modern, well structured city, which has sailing as part of his heritage and culture. The 2014 Worlds will see competitors racing in the natural setting of the Bay of Santander. One race course will be within the Bay, two opposite El Sardinero’s beaches and one opposite El Puntal beach allowing spectators the opportunity to follow the regatta and athletes.

About the ISAF Sailing World Championship

The 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championship will be the fourth edition of the event. Cadiz (ESP) hosted the inaugural championships in 2003 followed by Cascais (POR) in 2007. And Perth (AUS) will host the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in December.
Pepper at Farr 40 Worlds in Sydney
NZL Sailing Team Star boat helm is in action at the Farr 40 World Championships which starts today in Sydney.

Hamish Pepper is tactician on board Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad (USA). This week’s Rolex Farr 40 World Championship will pit the world’s best sailing strategists against each other with a standout talent line-up among the owners, many of them former world champions, and their tacticians.

Hamish Pepper is one of a number of big name tacticians in Sydney. James Spithill, John Kostecki, Tom Slingsby, Adrian Stead, Grant Simmer and Tom King are others among the headline acts as tacticians for the four-day championship hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron at Kirribilli from February 23-26.

Twenty teams representing five countries will vie for the title, including defending champions, Italian Massimo Mezzaroma’s Nerone.

Follow the action on the regatta website.

Will Tiller steers Kiwis to Hardy Cup victory
Three 21-year-old sailors from Auckland’s Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron outsailed their Australian opposition to regain the prestigious Hardy Cup ISAF 3, under 25 match racing event on Sydney Harbour earlier this month.

Over the past four years, young Australian crews have won the Hardy Cup twice, and now New Zealanders have notched up their second victory over the same period.

Will Tiller, Harry Thurston and Shaun Mason started the final day with a 2-1 semi-final win against the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Jordan Reece and then went on to defeat the defending champion Evan Walker in three straight matches in the final.

Over the four day regatta, Tiller and his crew, who sail for Full Metal Jacket Racing, lost only three match races in two round-robins and the semi-final.
The performance of Tiller and his crew epitomises the quality of match racing helming, tactics and crew work that constantly emerges from New Zealand in the wake of the nation’s ongoing involvement in the America’s Cup.

Graduates of the RNZYS youth training scheme, they have been match racing together and against each other for the past three years.  Tiller has twice won the Governor’s Cup in California, while Thurston sailed with another New Zealander, Adrian Short, when he won the Hardy Cup in 2009.

While Tiller and Thurston are Kiwis born and bred, Mason began his sailing in Mirror dinghies at Portsmouth, England, before his family moved to New Zealand.

Now fulltime sailors,  the trio are heading for another match racing regatta in Wellington and in March will spend a month in California, contesting the Ficker Cup and then, hopefully, the prestigious Congressional Cup.   All this leads towards the international circuit of match racing at a senior level. “We sailed a lot better as the regatta progressed and everything fell into place for us,” Tiller said after the final on February 10th. “It was our first win in six months, so we are delighted with the result and hopefully we can maintain that form in Wellington and then in Los Angeles.”

In the petit final to decide third and fourth placings overall, Adrian Short added to New Zealand’s good day by defeating Jordan Reece 2-0.
Silver Sails report on Hardy Cup
New Zealand presented the only entirely women’s crew to sail at the recent Hardy Cup Regatta which was taken out by the kiwi crew with Will Tiller at the helm. Team Silver Sails – Sam Osborne, Taylor Holland and Claudia Pierce placed eighth and had this to report after the event...

“We have arrived back in New Zealand with an 8th place medal. Not quite gold as we would have liked but as the old cliche goes, the results don't show how well we sailed nor how tight our races were.

“On our final day of racing we needed to win the remaining three races of the second round robin to have a shot at getting into the semi-finals. However, as luck would have it, we couldn't quite secure the wins despite some very tactical fighting downwind. Our final photo finish against David Gilmour proved that us, Silver Sails girls are up there with the big boys. Our wins against the top guns, Evan Walker and William Mackenzie mixed the game up and I think we managed to scare the rest while we were at it!

“The outcome of this regatta shows that our fitness level and boat handling skills are where we need them to be to successfully move up toward our final goal of the 2012 Olympics. Between the 24-27th of February, Yachting New Zealand are holding selection trials to determine which woman's team receives funding to compete in the world cup events for the year to come. As a team we are feeling very confident about our current position and go into these trials with determination and will to prove we can stand up amongst the world-wide women match racing competitors and come out on top.”

SSANZ Round North Island Race

Rough seas off the west coast of the North Island have caused two yachts in the SSANZ Round North Island two-handed fleet to turn back, on the longest leg from Mangonui to Wellington.

Zen, a Bakewell White 35, has withdrawn from the race after crewman Mark Winters injured his back, and the team aboard Elliott 1050 Gale Force (David Mason and Cameron Thorpe) has told race organisers they are heading for shelter from the rough seas.

Zen is returning to Mangonui, and Gale Force may also have to go back around Cape Reinga, as there are no easily accessible safe harbours on the west coast. At the 6.30am sched this morning both Zen and Gale Force were both a few miles south of the cape.

The forecast for the Kaipara sea area in which the yachts are racing was for seas becoming rough for a time, with a northerly swell rising to 4 metres for a time north of Cape Reinga and a southwest swell of 3 metres easing. The swell is not expected to subside for several days.

The remaining 35 yachts are currently on the wind, heading down the North Island west coast. At the 6.30am sched, Cookson 50 Akatea was in the lead, followed by M1 and Karma Police. The lead yachts are currently  off the Hokianga, with the tail enders off Ninety Mile Beach. The first yachts are expected in Wellington late Friday or early Saturday.

The first of four legs saw the fleet sail north from Auckland in a light breeze bound for Monganui. First over the line at Mangonui after the 152 nautical mile leg from Auckland was race favourite Akatea, a brand new Cookson 50 competing in her first major race. Akatea, sailed by Pete Geary and Rodney Keenan, finished at 13.06.29, completing the 152 mile leg in just over 23 hours.

37 boats left Auckland last Saturday for the start of the SSANZ run Two-Handed Round North Island Race. Entry numbers were second only to the inaugural event sailed a couple of decades ago.The race restarts from each of the stop-over points 24 hours after the 22nd boat arrives at the finish line.

This year sees the introduction of a great new social event on the regatta programme. The Steinlager Beach Party will take place on Motuihe Island on Saturday evening, March 19. The day’s racing will wind up close to the island in late-afternoon, allowing racers plenty of time to get into party mode and make their way ashore.  Big thanks to Steinlager for supporting the regatta.

International Paints Auckland Tauranga Race 2011

This year’s International Paints Auckland to Tauranga Race will start off the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at 1000 hours on 21 April.

“Last year’s Auckland to Tauranga Race was a light air challenge that frustrated many, not least Team G3 (now TeamVodafoneSailing) who missed out on a Racerecord” said Mr Ross Sheerin, Chair of this year’s Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club Race Organising Committee.

“However, we have received an informal indication from Simon Hull he will be back with TeamVodafoneSailing to have another go this year.” Ross wants the other big multis to front up also to provide them with some competition!

With the Race being run later this year there is every chance that light airs will not play such a part in the outcome of the Race.

“While every race is different the one thing that does not change with this Race is the great organisation and the warm welcome from the Tauranga Yacht and Powerboat Club after finishing” said Ross.

As in past years marina berthing will be available on arrival, plus hot food and showers at the Clubhouse, not to mention a ‘goodie pack’ on arrival.

Through key race sponsors International Paints, Steve’s Marine Supplies, Bridge Marina Travelift, Safety at Sea, Pats Pantry Pies and Ponsonby Pies a great range of prizes will again be on offer. The Friday night prizegiving will be followed by the traditional live band and party. Join in the fun!

Entries will be taken in the following Divisions:
A Monohull PHRF minimum 0.800 TCF
B Monohull PHRF maximum 0.799 TCF
C IRC Monohull (may be split into two divisions)
D Multihull handicap minimum length 10.67 m
E Multihull handicap maximum length 10.66 m
F Short handed Monohull PHRF (maximum two persons)
G Class Racing Monohull – minimum five entries

The NOR is now available allowing entries to be received. It can be found on the TYPBC website www.yacht.org.nz or on the YNZ Events Calendar. Email office@yacht.org.nz in the first instance with any queries.

RNZYS HARKEN Youth International Match Racing Championships

Jay Griffin (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia) won the 2011 HARKEN Youth International Match Racing Championships hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron from 11th – 16th February.

Slow and steady wins the regatta.  Jay Griffin and his crew of Henry Kernot, Hamish Hardy and Will Parker sailed well in the extreme light airs which presented themselves on the Auckland Harbour on the final day of the regatta.

The schedule the final day was finals Griffin v David Hazard (RNZYS) first to win three.  Petit-final, Josh Porebski (RPNYC) and Jordan Reece (RSYS) first to win two, but only one race in each could be completed. Griffin beat Hazard by 5 seconds and Reece beat Porebski by 43 seconds.

Race Two was started and then abandoned, and after much discussion between the Umpires and Race Committee the knock out series had to be terminated due to a lack of wind.

Meaning Griffin winning the only finals race is the overall 2011 Harken Youth International Match Racing Championship.  Griffin who qualified for the final in fourth place commented “We won the first race and were pretty happy with that.  It hasn’t really sunk in yet that we have won.  Coach Rob Bell helped a lot and did a good job, the Umpires and Race Committee did really well.  It was a good regatta with really tight racing and we were happy to be anywhere in the top four.”

In the petit-final Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Jordan Reece beat Wellington’s Josh Porebski to take third place overall.

Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Ross Masters commented at prizegiving “We are really pleased with the work-out the teams have given the new Elliott 7’s and we have received so much great feedback that they continue to far exceed our expectations”.  Masters thanked all the fantastic umpires, race management volunteers, support personnel, host families, and the ever growing group of Squadron members who all help put on this great youth event.

49er and 29er Nationals

The 2011 49er and 29er National Championships, set for 11th – 13th March, is shaping up to be a battle worth watching as New Zealand’s Olympic campaigners Peter Burling and Blair Tuke hit the water back in Auckland after spending a lot of the summer across the ditch.

The regatta will be run from Auckland Sailing Club, at Okahu Bay in Auckland with racing on the Waitemata Harbour. The 49er skiff, and its lead-in class the 29er is incredibly exciting to watch with fast racing, short courses and quick turn-arounds between races.

Team Sailing Selection Trials

The New Zealand Team Sailing Association is holding the 2011 New Zealand Open Team Sailing Nationals and ISAF Team Racing World Selection Trials, at Sandspit Yacht Club, Algies Bay, Warkworth, from Friday 22 April to Sunday 24 April 2011.

From this event up to three teams may be nominated to Yachting New Zealand for selection to represent New Zealand at the ISAF Team Racing Worlds in Ireland 2011.

You will find the NOR on the NZTSA website.

2011 Hobie Nationals

The 2011 Hobie National Championships will be held on 19th – 20th March 2011 at Takapuna Boating Club. More information is available here, check back in a few days for the NOR.

Black Sheep in F18 Champs

After a strong showing in day one, both Black Sheep Racing Teams competing at the New Zealand Formula 18 Championships managed to put together a solid performance and hold on to the top two spots.

Brad Farrand and James Sandall kept their overnight lead to take the regatta, with Reuben Corbett and Tom Bentham a close second.

“We are all very happy with the result given we only started sailing multihulls just over a month ago and were competing against some other experienced teams. We hope to include more of this racing in our calendar at some stage later in the year,” reports the team.

“For now though, we move our focus back to monohull match racing, where we will be putting in some solid training before we head to Europe in April.”

Auckland Clubs share picnic day

Wakatere Boating Club and Devonport Yacht Club spent the day together last Sunday for the annual Club picnic.

“This year Devonport Yacht Club’s skippers surprised us yet again by announcing we were all going to sail to Islington Bay, Motutapu ,” says Roger Pearson from Wakatere Boating Club, who took this photo.

“We left Narrow Neck at 10:30 in a fleet of  13 boats and cruised into Islington Bay at around 11:30. We had light winds all the way as we raced around Rangitoto. On arrival most of the junior members jumped off the yachts into the deep blue sea! Some had a lovely long walk, a picnic and then some egg throwing then we all headed off back.”

“It was a great experience for some of our junior members who have not had the chance to experience life an large yacht and some were fortunate enough to take the helm if only for a few moments. We all sailed back to Narrow Neck in time for the afternoon BBQ.”

See more photos from the picnic day by Roger here.

Adventure sail and picnic!

Anyone that great up with Swallows & Amazons as their favourite bedtime reading would get no better than French Bay Yacht Club's annual sail to Cornwallis Beach last Sunday.

Cornwallis is approximately 5nm from the club's home beach at French Bay in Titirangi, about 25 minutes drive from Auckland CBD.

A dozen Optimists, and a fleet including Starlings, Lasers, a Sunburst, a Topaz, Paper Tiger and a handful of Jollyboats, departed in light North East conditions on an outgoing tide, arriving at the picturesque beach about 90 minutes later, to join other club members and supporters who had provided a barbeque lunch, beach games, and windsurfing lessons.

Manukau Coastguard provided a safe escort, and when the tide turned that afternoon, the fleet sailed home, once again in the company of a tail breeze.
Great fun was had by all and the sail was an excellent reward in the middle of a busy sailing season.

French Bay Yacht Club has also utilised the services of Yachting NZ's Regional Support Officer, Kim Admore, and thanks Kim for his invaluable support, including advice and time on the water.

Sport Taranaki Staff Set Sail

One way to get to know your local sports trust is to get them out sailing, and that’s exactly what the New Plymouth Yacht Club did.

Photo: Sport Taranaki CEO Howie Tamati

After Sport Taranaki put the club through the SPARC ODT (Organisational Development Tool) recently it seemed a great opportunity to get the staff down to the yacht club to experience the sport first hand.

Staff skippered the six New Plymouth Yacht Club 420s and were assisted by six of the club’s starling sailors as crew. Races were set up with only one having done any sailing before, while the others had to quickly adapt to the speed and agility needed to sail a 420 if you want to stay dry.

A BBQ to finish off and stories of old rugby injuries stopping some from moving around the boat too fast wrapped up a great Friday evening.

Junior & Youth Sailing

Youth Winners at Sail Auckland 2011

At an ISAF Grade 1 event like 2011 Sail Auckland Regatta the big name Olympic sailors tend to get the spotlight, when there are plenty of interesting and hard fought battles going on at age-group level across all the fleets.

Of the RS:X 8.5 male youth sailors Sven Pedersen (pictured) came out on top of Enzo Pla in second and Kal Rutter in third. In the female youth equivalent NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team representatives from 2010 Georgia Schofield was the top placed sailor ahead of Naomi Mannering and Isobel Hawkins.

When combined the female winner, Georgia Schofield, was the second best placed youth sailor overall in the 8.5.

The Laser Radial fleet was the largest at the event and included top female Olympic campaigners and Masters sailors as well as the youth competitors. Michael Cate started the regatta strongly, opening up a lead, but as the four day event unfolded Sara Winter, from the NZL Sailing Team overtook. Cate finished up second overall and the top youth competitor ahead of Nicholas Croft, Sam McKenzie and Sam Schofield.

Of the female youth on the Radial course Molly Meech came home ahead of Elise Beavis and Teau McKenzie in the standings.

Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders were the Under 22 winners in the 470 fleet ahead of Frankie Lardies and Finn Drummond.

In both the 420 and the 29er all sailors are of youth age. Alex Munro and Brad Moss won the 420 event from
Sam Mackay and Oscar Rovick with Verity Judge and Gemma Jones third, and also top girls crew.

Jack Simpson and Logan Beck won the 29er skiffs ahead of Matthew Spray and Tyler Russell with Stewart Dodson and Harry Hull rounding out the podium.

Have a Go! On School Camp
Yachting New Zealand’s Sailing… Have a Go! trailer is at Shakspeare Bay all week with Albany Junior High School where 200 students are on school camp.Pictured: Ryan Leatham (Instructor) and Kim Admore (YNZ RSO) on day one of a big week

Kim Admore, YNZ NZCT Regional Support Officer for the Northern region recognized the benefit of being on site to assist Sailing… Have a Go! Instructor, Ryan Leatham, and together they will offer the students a chance to try sailing off the Whangaparoa Peninsular.

Kim explains that the school camp setting means that Sailing… Have a Go! is offered slightly differently:- “Doing  ‘Sailing… Have a Go!’ this way means we can put over 200 students through a modified program compared to the usual maximum of 50 sailors per week.  Exposing this number of students to sailing has to be positive.”

Next week Ryan takes the trailer north for a week in Whangarei where he will be working with people with disabilities giving them a chance to get out on the water and try sailing.
Junior Sail Auckland 2011
A week after the ISAF Grade One Regatta at Takapuna, Kohimarama Yacht Club hosted Junior Sail Auckland . This year it was a well attended regatta with over 215 entries on two courses.

Kohimarama  turned on some great breeze from the east to make racing interesting. Of note was the good techno fleet boosted with sailors from New Caledonia which upped the performance of the New Zealand Sailors.

The full results from the regatta can be found at

A group of yachties are planning a Marine Medic Level 2 Coastal Course in Christchurch on the 5th and 6th of March with a few spaces left available.

Run by Yacht Lifeline, this course is essential for those planning a coastal voyage. Taking you much further than your standard first aid course, marine medic assumes you are going to have to look after your casualty for an extended period before help can get to you. Cost is $225.00.

TEAMVODAFONESAILING announces Australian Campaign
It could have been much worse for TeamVodafoneSailing when the trimaran lost its rig on a harbour race in Auckland last Wednesday night, but the mast survived relatively intact and damage to the boat was minor.

“We were extremely lucky in the incident as not only was no one hurt, but the damage to the rig and boat were both minimal,” says Skipper and Owner, Simon Hull.

The break has given the crew time to slow down for once, and to contemplate the successes of the season so far, and all of the sailing still be done – including a stint racing in Australia in July and August.

The first half of the New Zealand summer season has delivered a full set of exciting race challenges for TVS: The boat set a new race record for multihulls in the Coastal Classic, completing the 119nm race in 7 hours and 16 minutes, but left the overall record of 6 hours 43 minutes, set by the supermaxi Alfa Romeo in 2009, to stand as a challenge for another year.

Then TeamVodafoneSailing suffered variable conditions in the 310nm Around White Island Race but still managed to set a new record, and went on to win five out of five races at Bay of Islands Sailing Week, racing at speeds in excess of 35 knots.

In February TeamVodafoneSailing completed the famous ‘Night Race to Kawau’ – an island near Auckland City - in a blistering 26.75 knot average, to finish in 54 minutes and 37 seconds.

Last Wednesday TeamVodafoneSailing was enjoying having another fast catamaran – the new AC45 just launched for the America’s Cup circuit – to play with, when a critical fitting attaching the rig’s starboard side stay failed and the mast fell over.

But the repair is expected to be completed in a matter of weeks and next up is a program of local racing. The BMW Auckland Regatta from 18-20 March is likely, as is the Auckland to Tauranga race at Easter, and the Auckland to Fiji race in June.

Following Fiji, the boat will be delivered to New South Wales, where it will race 385nm from Sydney to the Gold Coast as an unoffical entrant on 30 July, and another 358nm from Brisbane to Keppel, as an official entrant, departing 5 August, before taking in two of Australia’s most glamourous regattas sailed off the beautiful Whitsundays, the Airlie Beach Race Week (commencing 12 August), and Hamilton Island Race Week (commencing 19 August).

“That program will take us to the end of our first year as TeamVodafoneSailing. What a year it’s been – we can’t wait to sail the rest of it, and we wholeheartedly thank our sponsors, and all those that have helped us on the way,” says owner Simon Hull.

A return delivery to New Zealand in September will give the boat time to ready itself for the beginning of the 2011-12 sailing season, including another shot at the overall record in the Coastal Classic – one of very few New Zealand sailing records that TeamVodafoneSailing doesn’t now hold.
