Fitzroy Yachts lightens the load with Goldcore Light

by Mat Wylie on 17 Feb 2011
G50, designed by Dubois Naval Architects and constructed by Fitzroy Yachts uses Goldcore Light extensively in the interior. SW

With significant advancements in the production of Goldcore lightweight plywood, this brand is seeing growing popularity in all corners of the world. Goldcore Light is riding the popularity as one of the best lightweight plywoods in the business of Marine interior construction.

Fitzroy Yachts trialed and selected Goldcore Light for their G50 project which required light weight panels for bulkheads and cabinetry throughout the interior of the vessel.

The G50 is a 49.7m (164ft) fast cruising slopp designed by Dubois Naval Architects. Construction of the aluminum hulled vessel began in July 2010 and she will be launched in 2012.

Typically for such a project, foam or honeycomb panels would be specified, however when compared with Goldcore Light Plywood they found significant cost and production advantages . On top of this, the ease of work and handling offered far greater benefits with this lightweight ply.

With a growing reputation in the international market, Goldcore Light is now used in New Zealand, Australia, USA, Turkey and UAE with a trial currently in progress by Horizon Yachts Co Taiwan. This plywood is specifically designed and manufactured to continually meet the requirements and workability of custom to full production yards who understand the benefit of light weight panels manufactured to a recognized International standard.

Goldcore light plywood machines extremely well and sits flat on CNC machine beds. Manufactured as a 'multiply' to meet the BS1088 standards it offers good gluing and screw holding and yet weighs only 400kg/m3. This brand is going from strength in the local and international yachting world.
