Last Orders for Epirbhire before offshore racing
by Peter Davidson on 12 Dec 2002
New regulations for Category 1 races such as the Sydney to Hobart require each crewmember to have a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and a 406Mhz EPIRB for the yacht. 'EPIRBhire Australia wide' hires PLB's and EPIRBS both 121.5Mhz and 406Mhz.
EPIRBhire's Peter Davidson says they have the Hobart well covered, and are getting a lot of support from the safety conscious Victorian Yacht Clubs.
The biggest hurdle they have at the moment is the last minute decisions being made by boats heading north for the Coffs series. Although the PLB for crew members is not compulsory for Cat 2 races, they have proved to be a lifesaver.
“With the hire cost equal to two jugs of Rum & Coke they should be regarded as essential equipment, our suppliers will be closing for Christmas and we will run out of beacons and wet weather gear, so we need crews to order before the 20th of December or we simply will not have the stock”, said Mr Davidson.
Those competing in all offshore races this Christmas and New Year need to think ahead and organise their EPIRB & wet weather gear hire requirements.
