Wellington Race Harbour Opening - Velux 5 Oceans Velux 5 Oceans
Velux 5 Oceans update from Wellington, new Zealand.

They might be fierce competitors on the water but the Velux 5 Oceans skippers also enjoyed some friendly rivalry on land today to mark the opening of the official race harbour in Wellington.

The four solo sailors took a break from preparing their Eco 60 ocean racing yachts for the gruelling next sprint of the Velux 5 Oceans to race in landyachts known as 'blokarts'.

Hundreds of people gathered at Queens Wharf in central Wellington to watch the blokart racing, straight after the grand opening of the Velux 5 Oceans race harbour at 12.30pm.

Located in Shed 6 at Queens Wharf, the race harbour is open every day up until race restart from 11am to 6pm and features a stunning race photo exhibition, the official Velux 5 Oceans merchandise stall and the Maersk Line Climate Box, an interactive experience of Maersk Line's shipping practices. You can also test your strength and stamina on the Velux 5 Oceans grinder which simulates the winches used on the Eco 60 yachts.

On the evening of Wednesday February 2 the Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington will host a question and answer session with the Velux 5 Oceans skippers exclusively for their members. The following evening hundreds of guests and dignitaries will join the skippers at the Te Papa museum for the ocean sprint two prize giving ceremony.

Ocean sprint three starts from Wellington Harbour at 2.30pm on Waitangi Day, February 6. A departure ceremony will take place from midday at Queens Wharf before the action starts in the harbour.
