Team Tunnicliffe reports from the Miami OCR.
It was a short day for us today as we only had two races to complete at US Sailing's Rolex Miami OCR. We didn't have that great of a day, losing both races to finish the gold round 2-3. This placed us in a four-way tie for third, out of which we ended up seeded fifth. Being the fifth seed going into the quarterfinals places up against the fourth seed, Team Lehtinen from Finland.
Our racing started today after the repecharge group completed two races in a dying gradient breeze from the north west. We hopped in to the boats at the end of the gradient breeze and at the beginning of the sea breeze influence.
Our first race was against Austalia's Nicky Souter. We won the start and took the first cross, but missed the second shift which allowed her to get right back into the race. We allowed her to get to the right of us. Consequently she got the sea breeze influence first, passed us and took the race from there.
After a short break to reset the course, we then raced Great Britain's Lucy Macgregor. We had a similar start to the last race, but with slightly less advantage and this time we couldn't quite make the first cross. She managed to stay just ahead of us in the right (sea) breeze. At the top mark she was a couple lengths ahead and we couldn't catch up again. It was a rather disappointing day, but overall, we again learned a couple of key lessons, which we will take forward with us to the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. We start racing at 9:30.
