Sydney 38 One Design’s closely contested in JPMorgan regatta

The largest division in the prestigeous JPMorgan 2002 series was the Sydney 38 One Design fleet

Last year's JPMorgan IRC winner Barry Moore's Sydney 38 Blowfly has again shown that she’s one of the most consistent performers on the circuit with another JPMorgan series win.

With almost 30 Sydney 38’s racing in three fleets, this year the Sydney 38 fleet was racing One Design but again Moore proved that in the tight One Design racing its crew work and tactical positioning that produces results.

Two seconds and a win followed a midfleet result in race one. An excellent result in such close and exciting one design fleet racing.

Michael Jones Cinquante almost snatched the series at her first outing, only losing on a count back. This was a great result considering Jones has been busy with Rex Airlines in recent months and came into the series with limited preparation.

Andrew Short showed that he will be a strong performer in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Sydney 38 division with a third ahead of proven performers Rush and Cuckoo’s Nest.

As the Sydney 38 fleet continues its growth, there were five boats competing in their first series regatta, Cinquante has plenty of previous class experience and her close second was no surprise but the other three new crews worked well in challenging racing conditions.

Michael Hill’s first up win, showed that Blue Sky will be a force in the future,
Gavin Ward and Chris Dawson’s Eye Candy with a 5th in race 4 showed they are getting up to pace. JPMorgan director Peter Mason’s 6th. Overall was certainly pleasing in the very fresh breezes. Robin Tedder served his apprenticeship towards the rear of the fleet, but will soon be on song, as he continues to race against the strong Harbour fleet.

Once again the Sydney 38 fleet produced exciting racing and the grins on the faces of JPMorgan clients, who had box seats in the middle of the racing fleet, ensures that the new Australian sponsorship initiative with the ‘13th man’ is sure to be repeated.

The '38's will be racing hard this month with a big fleet expected for the Pittwater to Coff series, when even more new boats will be racing in their first offshore series.
