Races 2, 3 and 4 of the Over-the-Moon Promotions 42nd NS14 Nationals were held today on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. Peter Vaiciurgis and Tina Babbage in '2031' showed their class in the variable north westerly conditions taking boat of the day to currently lead the series overall with a total of six points after four heats.
In race 2, Philip and Georgina Scott in 'Bandit' led at the end of the first lap in a 10 – 12 knot nor wester. They were closely followed by Peter Vaiciurgis and Tina Babbage in '2031' and Bryce Edwards and Amanda Stern in 'Tempest'. However 'Bandit' was over the line early at the start. Hugh Tait and Taylor Hodgkinson in 'Carbon Neutral' sailed well to finish third behind '2031' in second and 'Tempest' the winner.
Race 3 was sailed in 8 – 10 knots and was a battle from the start between 'Carbon Neutral' and '2031'. At the end of the first lap, both David and Henry Stabback in 'The Hairy Lemon' and Ross and Hayden Hansen in 'Evolution' pressed the leaders. At the finish it was '2031' who prevailed by 5 seconds over 'Carbon Neutral' with Rohan Nosworthy and Sophie Holt in 'Aqua Rodent' charging through to third.
Race 4 was sailed in light and shifty winds and there were a number of lead changes during the race. At the end of the first lap 'Carbon Neutral' led Kylie Vaiciurgis and Rebecca Wiley, in second (showing the skill runs in the family), and '2031' in third. By the end of the second lap, Sean Edmiston and Anna Lashko in 'Merlin' had moved into third place. The highlight of the race was the gybing duel between 'Carbon Neutral' and '2031' from the final mark to the finish, with '2031' taking first place by 2 seconds and 'Merlin' holding onto third.
Racing will continue today with the regatta concluding on Sunday 2nd January.
