Sydney Hobart Sensation- Wild Oats XI, RAN protested by Race Committee

by Sail-World.com on 28 Dec 2010
Tim Cox explains the protest - Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2010 Crosbie Lorimer http://www.crosbielorimer.com
Sail-World.com is streaming the 1705 Sydney Hobart Radio sked and Radio relay traffic on 6516kHz.

At the beginning of this afternoon sked, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Radio Relay vessel's David Kellett announced to the fleet that the Race Committee was protesting both Wild Oats XI and RAN under Sailing Instructions 44.1A and 44.2 which pertain to the Mandatory Reporting of Declaration of Ability to continue at Green Cape.

Race Committee Chairman Tim Cox reports that there was no declaration report from either vessel.

The Protest will be heard at 13:30 tomorrow.

In the 2001 Sydney Hobart race, the Volvo 60 Tyco was disqualified for failing to make the Mandatory report.

More news as it comes to hand.

Wild Oats explains:

Wild Oats XI was at latitude 43 02 longitude 148 25 at the radio sked. She has now reported in to Race Control giving an ETA of 21:30 which was heard by JBW in the middle of Bass Strait also. An early report from Wild Oats XI advised that the boat took a large wave which dumped water on the radio but it was apparently back in service quite quickly.

If Wild Oats XI is disqualified then Sean Langman and Anthony Bell's Investec Loyal is poised to take line honours.

44. MANDATORY REPORTING FROM

GREEN CAPE (370 15’ SOUTH)

44.1 On approaching 370 15’ South a boat is to assess whether:
(a) its HF Radio is operational and has a signal strength fit for the ensuing purpose;
(b) the required number of liferafts are on board;
(c) its engine and batteries are operational;
(d) the boat and its crew are in a satisfactory condition to continue; and
(e) the skipper has comprehensively considered the most current weather
forecasts and considers that the boat and crew are fully prepared for the
conditions forecast.

44.2 When in the vicinity of 370 15’ South, but not later than Gabo Island (370 34’
South), if a boat is able to meet all the requirements of SI 44.1, the boat shall
call 'JBW' on the Race Frequency and make the following report:

'JBW', this is [BOAT NAME]. We are in the vicinity of 370 15’ South at [HOURSMINUTES].
The skipper declares that we comply with the requirements of SI 44.1 and elects to continue racing'.
A boat that is unable to contact 'JBW' may attempt to contact Hobart Race Control to fulfil the requirements of this
SI.
Boats which are not recorded by either 'JBW' or Hobart Race Control as having complied with SI 44.1 and SI 44.2 shall
be recorded DNF (amends RRS 63.1).

--------------------

The next radio sked will be at 0005 tonight, and each subsequent night on 4483 kHz. Then also at 0735 and 1705 hours on each subsequent day on 6516 kHz. and as at other times as may be advised by the Radio Relay Vessel JBW.

During the race, boats retiring have been reporting to JBW on this frequency as did the boats making their Mandatory Green Cape declaration *** (details below) and emergency race traffic will also be directed to JBW who will maintain a listening watch 24 hours per day.

Boats will report wind strength over 40 knots (that might happen tonight, as the fleet sails down the NSW South Coast.)
